Transmission service

I recently purchased a 2004 4Runner v6 sr5 sport 4x4 that is approaching 200k miles. It runs, drives and shifts perfect and has obviously been very well taken care of but I have no past service records. My question is should I go ahead and service the transmission? The fluid looks and smells normal.

 

I would probably do a complete trans oil change just for piece of mind. I am getting ready to do my 04 at 220k. Don't have it power flushed! Just do a fluid exchange, including the torque converter. If the previous owners didn't change the fluid regularly, then a power flush could dislodge debris that could clog your valve body.

I still need to do my transmission and radiator flush then everything will be refreshed from when I bought it, plus I just hit 100k a couple weeks ago so I need to do my belts for peace of mind.

 

I have a 2005 4Runner v6 sr5 from new. The dealer I bought the car from did a tranny D/F with 6 quarts of T-iV Toyota fluid at 100,000 miles.

Check to see what fluid you are using and stay with that - if possible. I personally think even if you mix WS with T-iV your transmission will be fine, but ask Toyota.

Lots of people use Valvoline Maxlife - so they end up with a mix of tranny fluids I suppose, and they seem to run ok that way too.

T-IV is a full synthetic, so it's a good Toyota brand and is still used in some of their cars and trucks.

I have 177,000 miles on my 4runner and it always used T-IV Toyota brand. The tranny never has slipped or acted up.

I believe Scotty Kilmer said he never saw one fail?

leonp24 is missing his marbles, Can't read either. I said I have 177,000 miles on my OEM 2005 Toyota tranny using only T-IV. It's a Toyota brand - used for years by other manufacturers as well!

 

@captsolo, you should go back to the dealer and have them do the ATF service with the correct fluid: WS

Your dealer made a mistake and should rectify this. Toyota does not recommend mixing T-IV and WS - and T-IV is not full synthetic.

Why is captsolo still spewing this T-IV nonsense?? The owners manual for 2005 has been posted numerous times to prove it takes WS... please for the love of god quit telling people its ok to use T-IV fluid in their WS transmission!

 

It's OK to use T-IV. The dealer that sold me my 4runner new used T-IV when they did the 100,000 D/F. The Japanese put T-IV in my car when it was delivered.

Yoda doesn't know JS about T-IV. It's used by other manufactures and is Toyoda brand. Yoda is a DA, sorry to have to tell you this.

He manufactures no fluids - just nonsense. Ask Toyota about their T-IV.

 

@captsolo - actually @Toy Yoda does know what he's talking about. Your Toyota came from the factory with WS and (I'm assuming) your dealer made a mistake with they serviced it with T-IV.

Your name calling is concerning as all it does is fill the thread with misinformation and argument.

You should go back to the dealer and ask them to perform a full service with the proper fluid: WS

 

2005 4runners were NOT delivered with T-IV!

Can you explain what your little abbreviations mean? Are you still calling mebers that post facts childish names? Didnt you get banned from the other forum for that, under bother your user names? & recently suspended on here??

Grow up & read your owners manual.
