Eh, I've had good success, but you gotta have reasonable expectations.

Why care? I like to drive 3 hours before stopping on roadtrips cause I'm lazy. I want to preserve that range.

Well I think tire tread has a lot to do with it. Resistance maybe. I’m actually running a light suv (crossover), passenger tire on my 2010 Limited rims. And it is so smooth, handles better, tracks narrower, but is lower and have to be super careful in rain.

    I average 17-18 mpg with 285's.

Mostly city with short highway hops.

When I first slapped my 275 70 17 tires on my 2019 otherwise stock 4runner I noticed the tires felt heavier. Not drastic but the heft was there. If I remember correctly my mileage dropped by .5 mpg to 18.5 from 19. I didn't care though because the tires looked so good compared to the highway tires!

Present day its mostly city with some highway here and there. The computer readout shows 17.8 - 18.4 mpg with 3inch lift and 275 70 17 falken wildpeaks in load C. The addition of aluminum skids seem to help or the vehicle still breaking in after 35k.

Also not sure if anyone mentioned but larger tires will throw off your mpg calculation slightly as the computer thinks you drove fewer miles. I don't bother with that though. Who has time for that.

I noticed my speedometer seems more accurate with the 285's.

You're correct! Mine was almost perfectly accurate with 285's compared to GPS.

IMHO, this is why owners driving on stock 265's are seeing higher mpg than they are actually getting.

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
I really gave up on tracking MPG since I'm crawling in 4low 1st - 3rd gear most Saturdays.
Didn't go off road this weekend but did drive 3 hours round trip to the big city - Springfield, MO and back.

Hand Calculated MPG for this last tank 15.78, eh that's almost 16mpg!!!
That's with E rated Yokohama 285/70R17 Mud Terrains aired up to 40psi.
    No regear.

I was holding 18.75 mpg hand calculate average over multiple tanks with stock size Standard Load (aka P rated) Falken Wildpeak AT3W' and all the other weight I have (Sliders, skids, bumper, winch, etc).
