I ordered the canvas back for my new runner but have been thinking about dog safety. Currently I use a hammock between rear seat and front seats. So In the event of an accident I would think that would be more secure for my dog, having 2 seats in front them stop them from flying forward.

My thoughts on the canvasback would be for the dog to have full access and more room with the seats in the stowed position.

what are you canvasback owners doing to secure your pets?

Unless your dog is wearing a harness they are going to get injured in a bad crash.

I am always amazed at people who have them sitting in the first or second row loose. Especially a bigger dog, the possibility of them coming over the seats and breaking someones neck in the front seats is a real possibility.

I harness/belt them in the second row. Perfectly free to lie down or sit/stand up with heads out the window.

We have a Ruffland intermediate kennel in the back for our Aussie Shepard/Golden Retriever mix. Very safe in it and she's very comfortable. And the kennel itself is quiet with no rattles on the road.

None yet, it hauls my dog and my doghouse bass to rehearsals and gigs.
Which system do you have? My dog is currently 80 lbs and the harness system I have right now is really too short.

All I have currently is a hammock that covers the back seat and attaches to the front seat head rest

I have the Canvasback liners and Raingler separators. That way, if anything happens, they’re cushioned whereas a metal separator could hurt them. They also make a net for the rear window which is great for rolling the window down but also great from keeping glass from raining on the babies.

Just curious how others take their dogs on trips? I bet poor ventilation on cargo area would not be a good idea. (We are a family who drives with windows closed. Don't like the wind noise.)

I'm soon to be a dog parent, I should be getting the puppy mid August (Born in June). Going through dog related threads.

with the A/C running the temperature and ventilation isn’t an issue. These crates are also slotted on the sides for ventilation.

*edit* I took my boy for a several mile hike in hot weather and on the return home the crate was cold to the touch when I got home. Just for reference. But if it’s a hot day and your windows are rolled up with no A/c circulating there will be issues.

Any idea about these metal ones from Petco? (with a cushion base for comfort) More ventilation and I can use tie downs?

I didn't plan to use this in car. I was thinking this would be home use and just use the harness that go around neck and legs and tie to the child seat anchor. That's a bad choice?

(For anyone thinking to comment don't trust comments on forum this is just to get ideas. :) I have already booked a Vet appointment a week after the promised delivery date so I can ask everything before we head for a trip on highway.)

This crate won’t do much in terms for crash protection. Gunner and Ruffland are the only two crates I’d trust for vehicle kenneling. Gunner being the superior choice though however two won’t fit in a 4runner. So I don’t use them or else I would.

The wire crate works great for home kenneling though.

the anchoring is a terrible idea in the event of a crash they’d still go flying and end up snapping their neck and breaking their legs depending on the severity of the accident.

Also, finding a competent vet is key. A lot of vets don’t know a lot other than medicine. Specially when it comes to behavior, training and things of that manner.

Anyways here are some links to the crates I listed.

    https://www.centerforpetsafety.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/2015_cps_crate_summary_072215.pdf

(this is a 3rd party company. The wire crate you mentioned failed every test)

they are well worth the money. Both dogs survived the crashes. The crates also bullet proof literally to an extent (shotgun pellets).

I will tell you to NEVER use these cages. For anything. We had one when I was younger and our dog had gotten her paw trapped in between the sides. We had to cut the entire cage apart to get her freed.
