Hi everyone. I am not a car guy and am trying to navigate what to do next about my 4Runner. Happy to hear much more qualified peoples thoughts.

My mechanic has informed me that something got into the 8th piston and damaged the engine so badly that he said I need to put a whole new engine in. The price quoted was $10,500 that includes labor. I'm trying to decide whether to just get rid of the car and buy something else or fix it.

My mechanic also offered me $1,000 for it. I'm inclined to take his offer. Any thoughts?

$10,500?? Wow. That is an insane ripoff. At that price you drop a crate engine in. Try going to a different shop.

    Another shop quoted me $9,000-$10,000

Wow that is sad I feel the pain. If I faced an engine failure (rare it seems) I would cut my losses and say goodbye.

Try sourcing the engine and parts yourself and get a quote just for labor. You can probably find an engine for $2500-$3000 and doing a remove and replace job shouldn’t be $7,000.

Anyone have an idea of what a fair price would be if I sold it as is. The car is totally stock.

Your mechanic is a friggin shyster trying to rip you off. Look on Ebay, lots of engines for about 3k. He's just trying to steal your 4runner from you and then keep it or resell for 18k. Tell him I said he can shove it up his you know where.

    Run from him.
