2021 Blinding Headlights - what to do?

    In short, the headlights on my '21 4runner are too bright. They are annoying to me and others.

    This weekend, I was towing about 2,500 lbs. At night.

    I had several vehicles flash their high beams at me. I noticed that highway signs were impossible to read until I got close enough that the signs were out of the main beam of my headlights.

    What good options do I have to safely operate at night?

    Yes, the headlights were on low. DRLs are not bright enough for night use.

    My '13 Tundra had the ability to steer the headlights up/down from an adjustment wheel in the cab.

    I love the headlights on my ‘21, there is an adjustment screw to adjust for hauling. I didn’t like the height stock on my ‘21, it was low a bit, I adjusted it up.

    You could put a resistor in the circuit to limit the current and dim the lights. You would have to do a little research into which resistor is the correct rating, but it wouldn't be difficult. Don't know what it does to warranty though.

    Using DRLs as headlights is illegal in most states because the tail lights aren't on, not a good solution.

    Just have them adjusted down a little. It’s no big deal.

    You cannot dim leds like that.

    I drove back from the Mt.Princeston/Hancock area late Friday night, 285 to 24 and I was so happy the leds are bright, and that I changed the brights to Leds (with drl driver) it’s night and day safer for seeing animals. The auto bright control sucks in town, but out in the dark it works great!

    I agree its not a big deal to adjust them. I'm curious if there are other or better ideas.

    I was on Hwy 160 between Walsenberg and South Fork, CO and then also I-25.

    The couple of hundred pounds of weight on the the tongue made enough the difference to shine the lights higher up. I haven't experienced this problem before towing this weekend.

    You can have the dealership aim your headlights per manufacturer specification to get you back to OEM specs. Then I would check into why you're sagging, adjust your trailer if possible, (weight distribution, hitch height, ect.)

    If none of that works look into heavier springs. They're not that expensive, and are relatively easy to install. If you're sagging while towing, you need them. The stock rear springs sag with the lightest amount of weight.
