Below MSRP Deals??

Hi, I an in market for an offroad capable vehicle. I've been looking at 4Runner, Tacoma, Wrangler, Bronco, etc. I really want 4Runner but given the market situation with chip shortage, I can't even find any dealers in my area that have 21 4Runner TRD Offroad in stock. I don't mind placing factory order and wait 2-3 months. Question is what's the best deal I can get.

Despite of the market situation, I see few of Jeep dealers still offer 6~8% below invoice for the Wrangler and Gladiator. These dealers openly advertise their pricing on Jeep forums. I don't see that kind of information on 4Runner forum so I decided to post and ask the question. What's the best deal I can get these days?

Best you’re going to get for the forseeable future is msrp on any trim level.


There may be a dealer out in the middlenof nowhere that will give you 1-2k off, but the effort might not be worth it unless you live close by, in which case, get on the phone and start calling.

 

Even used 4Rs are selling for more than new MSRP these days...

 

msrp is what you should "expect." You also might find that the wait is longer than 2-3 months for a 4Runner. Supply is getting worse by the day and isn't even close to rounding the corner.

 

Are you looking for performance or "looks"/"curb appeal"? A published list of the worst 4x4s of 2021 includes two Jeeps (including Wrangler). You sacrifice some with a Tacoma but I got by on some pretty intensive deer and elk hunts (and guided on wild pig hunts in really sloppy mud while in grad school) with a 1985 SR5 P/U 4-banger that lasted for 327K miles. Our Jeep lasted one season and cost more in repairs than the payments totaled. Our Scout was under powered and very heavy. Our two Nissans (Frontier Crew Cab and an Xterra) performed well but didn't last more than 15 years. Bronco was falling apart after 1 years.

In short, I'd say look at a used 4Runner or TLC with low miles. Expect to pay more than list price, though! We got a 2019 SR5 with <18K miles and love it! You can reasonably expect a well-maintained 4Runner or TLC to go easily past 150K or 200K.

I got $500 off MSRP, only because that was this dealer's standard way of advertising their dealership.

I believe price gouging is illegal, especially if it's due to a shortage.

To add, we are getting our TRD Pro from them at $1500 off of msrp. I'm sure they would wiggle a little bit on whatever you buy from them.

Why is it "gouging"?

Market demand as compared to inventory is high, price goes up.

Everyone who has ever bargained the price of a car downward has participated in this system and acknowledged the capitalism model.

You can tell them that I pointed you towards them. I think they're giving us a deal on ours because my parents having been buying vehicles through them for years. I would say they're a dealership that's really hoping to have their customers keep coming back instead of trying to make a quick buck off of people. Good luck!

 

When have you ever been able to negotiate down $20k?

 

You could try to use Costco’s Auto Program. I was able to get my 3021 Venture for $44,800 with a MSRP of $48,300. I just picked up my 4Runner last week, but he mentioned instead of $300 below invoice they are now charging $300 below MSRP due to the supply issue. I lucked out.

so you got $14k off msrp with the costo program? I find that hard to believe. Costco price is usually invoice or $500 over invoice. Either way dealers aren’t participating in any programs or incentives because of the shortages.

 

lol sorry about that. I paid $44,800 which was a great deal because it came with KDSS and other features I could live with.

 

My 4Runner had a $10K "market adjustment" on the sticker. I ended up paying just about $3k under MSRP, so I paid about $13k under their advertised price.

So it's not impossible to do, and actually that $10k market adjustment went away without hesitation to both sales people I talked to before pulling the trigger.

 

Man, I'd love to hear where these deals that are thousands under MSRP are coming from. Costco doesn't even have associated dealers in large areas of the west coast because they don't want to give discounts. Nearly every single 4Runner in Oregon is pre sold before hitting the lot.

 

I got mine from Capitol Toyota in San Jose.

Right time and right salesperson I guess. The sales woman I spoke to the week before, and walked out on, didn't budge 1 cent from MSRP. The salesperson I did end up buying from was the internet sales guy, gave me a great deal pretty much off the bat.

 

Not the same. If we are talking about msrp as the baseline… it’s way different to get $3k off msrp vs. paying a markup of $20k up from msrp. We aren’t counting the advertised price that can be anything the dealer wants it to be.

 

Perhaps you misread my post, I got the $10K markup off, and then I got an additional $3k off under MSRP.

 

I'm not calling anyone a liar but why would any dealer do below msrp right now? Even small town middle America dealers can sell for msrp within hours. I'm not advocating paying msrp or above, it just makes zero sense, these guys are commission based and even if they're not, they're not making it up in volume. Only thing that would make sense is if they living under a rock this entire time lol.

Longo toyota for example is selling at msrp but they are also selling used 4runners for the same price or more (for people who don't want to wait)

 

The only way it is justified is that the used prices are totally nuts. A sideways trade going newer for short money is possible.

 

To clarify, I bought my truck back in April.

Also, it's important to know that there are no less than 15 Toyota dealers within a 1-hour drive from me. If you're inclined to get a deal, and patient enough to wait for one, you can.

Pavo you are exactly correct. I am a new member here so I may not be seen as having the "Cred" of some of the long time posters here. However, I have personally found that there is no dealer in the state of California that is selling under MSRP for any model of the 4Runner. I'm holding out until the prices come down. If it means waiting a year or two then so be it.

Believe me I have been searching state wide to find a deal. As most of us Californians know we can't buy new vehicles out of state. Anything under 7,000 miles purchased outside the state can't be registered in CA. So it makes it hard to get a better deal on a new vehicle.

I am never one to put down someones choice of purchasing. If you want the vehicle and are willing to pay the price then it's all good. We can't put down someone for getting something they really want.

An example was when I bought a 2005 KTM 300EXC in October/November 2004. It was a new model year major change in the frame. It was normally a 6,000.00 bike. I paid 8K for that bike and did not blink an eye. Malcom Smith Motorsports had the only one in Southern California. Another 1,000.00 in suspension, add on protection/ergos and I had a 10,000.00 dirt bike I could race desert on. I sold it a few years back for 1300.00. The buyer blew it up first time out.

FWIW, I'm sometimes pretty good at holding out for good deals. I saved from 2013 to 2018 to get my Super Tenere. For me there is no rush. I set up my 2005 GMC Sierra to make do for my light offroad rig until I can get my 4Runner.

Respectfully, that's not true. I'll give you this, the DMV does their best to make it confusing.

"If you are a California resident and acquire a new car, truck, or motorcycle from another state, it must be certified to meet California smog laws to be registered in California."

"Not all new vehicles are manufactured to be sold in California." They're commonly referred to as 49 state vehicles - because they do not meet Cal's smog requirements. It's not as common today as it once was(meaning, not 50 state certified).

It took me a while to go thru the gyrations of deciding exactly what I wanted from the Tacoma initially to the 4R, from the ORP to the Pro, from the MGM color to the LR color. I got lucky and one popped up nearby for $2,000 above MSRP and purchased it on 05/13/21. Happy to have it, but at the end of the day it is just a Toyota 4R and not the Hope Diamond! There will be plenty of them available in due time!

 

This is not correct, you are able to buy a new vehicle and register it in CA. You have to make sure you have all your ducks in row when you head to the DMV.

You need to have
1. MSO (Manufacture Statement of Origin) from the dealer
2. Smog Check
3. VIN Inspection (Done at DMV when registering)
4. Pay taxes at DMV.

Things to look out for, the MSO may take more than 10 days to receive from your dealer so you will need to go to DMV to register your vehicle and pay taxes on (within 10 days of landing in CA), then head back to DMV with the MSO to register it in so you can get the title.

 

Sorry guys that I left something out. I honestly was not aware that all 4Runners sold in the US were 50 state emissions certified.

New vehicles cannot be registered in California unless they are 50-State emissions certified. Any other vehicle has to have at least 7500 miles on it and pass smog at a STAR certified station.

Believe me you have to be very careful when you purchase new out of state. You would be surprised at how many new vehicles do not meet the 50 state emissions standard.

This is going to open up a lot of options for purchasing.
