I have a 2020 4Runner XP and I’m looking to make some small mods that will enhance the look of my 4Runner but nothing so major that it will ruin my lease agreement. I’m planning on buying it at the leases end, sell it and get a 2021 TRD pro. Any suggestions on some mods for the moment tho? thanks.

Any mods you will do will decrease the value. Maybe do a small tri-color badge, tinted windows, a roofrack, some decent tires and if you want rims, save the originals. Led lights interior, H9-H11 conversion, blacked out badges.

XP isn’t a real model trim that shows up in a VIN search.

You can argue that they already started modding it.

Yea, I’m feeling that way. I was leaning more towards just getting small things that can be taken off within a few hrs with no major hassle

Yea, when I was checking KBB about it, it didn’t give this specific model type. Yet it has the blacked out badges, black gloss rims, running boards and such. I wish it had that bumper shield down front. I wanted to cut and install one but thought otherwise because of the warranty stuff

I wanna make sure that when I sell it after buying that I get what it’s worth. I’m trying to keep the mileage down to under 40k when I attempt to sell since it will still be in excellent condition. If need be I’ll get the scratches buffed and maybe a color match spray job in the front bumper for the nicks and scratches

adding the rims and tires sounds like a good move because they can always transfer over to the TRD when I’m done with this one. Already have the blacked out badges but want the American flags in the back side windows. Thought about the roof rack but it would literally be just for aesthetics since I’m not into the camping just yet. I would do off tossing but nothing more that a lil dirt and small hills. Wouldn’t wanna get stuck lmao

So you have a 2020 but want a 2021 Pro when your lease ends?

How long is your lease only one year? Didn't think that was even possible.

I modded my leased 2016 but I would recommend against doing anything significant until you actually own it. I had planned on buying mine but you can't say for certain what your situation will be. I ended up having to trade mine in and I lost the value of any mods I did that I couldn't swap off to sell. If you're planning on ditching this one for a new one that quickly then I would say just drive it as is and save your money until you have the 4Runner Pro you actually want. Just my $0.02.

Lol it’s a 2020 yes. 3 year lease but when I get my 2021 I’m buying used vs paying an expensive note for a 50k truck

I'd look at the lease contract to see what's permissible.

Yea that’s what I’m hearing. I thought the lease to be a better option to guarantee that I’ll be able to make a better move on the next vehicle choice but I’m seeing it comes with some setbacks lol at least I know when I turn it in, I’ll either grab a 2 year old 4Runner or just go current model. They’re just getting to be more expensive every year.

When I got my 2016 I asked the dealer what I could do specifically to the vehicle. They told me nothing that involved cutting body panels and no engine mods aside from a CAI. Otherwise it was free game. Your contract may be different now however.

Having done a lease once I would never do it again personally. Too many downsides for very few upsides. Watch out when you go to buy it, depending on the state you may have to pay sales tax and registration fees again. May be better off trading it in to a dealer before the lease ends. That's what I did with mine when I bought my current '08 and they gave me $2k over the lease buyout in trade value. I was able to put that $2k straight towards the purchase of the '08.

If you plan to buy it do any mod that you like. But if you want to return the vehicle after lease don't change anything other than tires.

You can also do any kind of mod and trade in before the lease ends. Then it won't be a big issue with mods.

IMO if anyone want to lease selecting TRD Pro is a better option.

Awesome information. Thank you for that. I didn’t know you could trade it in or sell it to another dealer. I’m going to check that out too.

Interesting, never heard of this "XP". Looks like it's an aftermarket package offered by the Southeast Toyota consortium based out of Deerfield Beach, FL -- it looks pretty cool, but what is the base package on which it is based? If a 4x2, it must be an SR5 or SR5P?

I leased my 2019 and modded the heck out of it. Lift, tires, roof rack, brush guard, side steps, etc. All of it can come off when it ends in a year. But, my agreed to purchase price at the end of the lease is $24k.

What will a 2019 SR5 4Runner with 36k miles be worth in a year? A heck of a lot more than $24k. Likely $34k. I have maybe $2000 in mods, that made the vehicle much more usable in the dirt and doing the things I bought it for.

My plan is to purchase it, then keep it another year or two, then trade it in on a new Tundra once the new platform has proven itself.

Just a SR5 with premium wheels, blacked out emblems and Navi. Kind of like a mix between the premium and the off road TRD if I had to compare. But yea, I know it’s a SR5

No worries the SR5 is still a nice ride. The XP was something they came up with and isn't a real trim, but I kinda dig it so lean into it.

I will. I love it. I would have waited but my wife convinced me that the time was now because I had been wanting one for so long. The only thing I regret is not getting the 4x4. The throttle response is lack luster and I’m going to attribute that to the 4x2 dynamic of it all.

throttle response is definitely not due to the 4x2 dynamic... these trucks all have poor throttle response. sprint booster or pedal commander is an easy mod to correct this that you can easily remove any time.

With the insane used car prices nowadays how about trade in the 4x2 and buy a 4x4 and then spend the money?

Wait, what?? They make a 2-wheel drive 4Runner?? What on earth for? That's like building a 1-ton dually crew cab pickup, then installing a 100 hp 4 cyl motor. It defeats the whole purpose of the vehicle.

That also makes sense. I figured a lease would help me with switching up every few years but it’s starting to seem like a headache not being able to do what I want as much lol I’m a 2A enthusiast tho so my free money goes to that hobby anyway lmao

That's if you're an outdoorsmen I'm guessing. I hate to group anyone into any particular category but we don't all off-road and climbing things in our vehicle. I live in the city, no hills and there aren't any woods, soooo yea. they make 4x2 for people like me who have no reason or need for a 4x4 outside of taking a weekend trip to Gatlinburg which happens maybe twice a year. Not even enough to feel like I need a specific vehicle just to take a trip. I'd probably only need it for driving in the rain honestly. so yea, you can keep your opinion in that sense over there...
