My wife is going to want a power lift gate. I’ve been doing some reading and the auto ease power gate seems sketchy at best. Could I just toss some stronger struts in to effectively get the gate to raise itself? I’m just a bit worried if it’ll be difficult for her to lower it.

Maybe you can visit a dealer and have her try one? Opening isn't too hard but closing takes more effort than most SUV's...but my wife can do it. The fact that the rear window slides down helps too since you can load many things without opening the liftgate.

Isn’t that what the roll down hatch window is for?

The smart keys have arrows on the hatch to open and close hatch window

Added heavy struts after upgrading speakers and sound deadening. Harder to close with the new struts, but was needed after adding the extra weight. Without the weight, the gate will open easily but not automatically. There's a point about half way open when the pistons will take over the work load.

Google "4runner aftermarket power liftgate". You'll get a few links and installation walk-throughs. I stumbled across a thread on the forum a few months ago that mentioned this one:

    https://www.hautopart.com/product/toyota-4runner-2014-power-liftgate/

I was looking for a way to stop my liftgate short of full open so I could wouldn't bump it on the garage door when opening it. I have no experience with it beside reading the post though. Good luck.

Yeah I’m just hoping my wife gets used to it. She’s going from a loaded Durango R/T so she’s losing some features.

hey now I still own one. haha. But having two in the driveway is just asking for headaches. It is unfortunate they haven't given the 4runner a few more creature comforts for the soccer moms though. I mean the limited is fine but the front ends are ugly af. And no auto lights and stuff is just an odd decision. Power lift gate, leather auto lights. that's all it would take. But Toyota is just like honda atvs. they are purpose built to last a long time. No fancy do dahs.

 I agree about the missing creature comforts wholeheartedly. Does make the 4R seem a bit behind the times in some regards. Still one of my, if not the, favorite vehicles I've ever owned!

Good to hear. I’m sure it’ll be a good ride. I’m sure it’ll be getting katzkin leather interior at some point.
