2021 TRD Pro in Lunar Rock Finally but…

So I’ve been on a hunt for a TRD Pro (in LR or MGM) or the ORP in MGM and i finally got a call from a local dealer that they have a TRD Pro in LR that’s being built in Japan right now that I can put my name on. I immediately confirm that I’d put a deposit down IF they are selling it at MSRP and they say that they don’t sell any 4Runners above MSRP. Great!

Not so fast,… they tell me that this particular 4Runner will come with a Lift and “special” set of wheels which costs $8,400 extra. So i go on to ask details about that. The sales person said he doesn’t know much about it and that another manager will call me back but if i decide not to put a deposit down now, it can go to another person on the waiting list.
So i put a $500 refundable deposit down right away.

The manager calls me later that day and explains that the lift is 1 inch in the front and not 100% sure for the back and that the “special” wheels are not new wheels but just different Offroad tires (which does not include the original tires btw, if i want the original tires, it’ll be $400 extra) and that package is $8,400 in addition to the MSRP.

I haven’t done mods on trucks before so i looked up how much a typical lift would cost and it looks like about $1,500 so just having extra tires for $8,400 total sounds like a complete rip off. This sounds like just another way of placing a premium pricing on a 4runner. But then again this vehicle is selling for $10k over today at various dealerships, maybe i should just take it?

For now i still have the deposit in place and i can take this Lunar Rock TRD Pro but let me know what you guys think and if you have any advice for me.

Pretty weak they can tell you how much these "extras" cost but can't actually tell you what they are.

$8400 for tires and what I assume is a spacer lift (if it even has a lift vs just stock) is a complete rip off. A set of decent off road tires mounted can be found all day for under a grand.

 

Yeah at this point, i think it’s whether I’m willing to take the deal with the “market adjustment price”

I’m still curious, wouldn’t a typical lift be at minimum 3 inches? Would 1 Inc even make a difference to consider as an upgrade?

 

Sounds sketchy to me! The Pro comes stock with a 1" higher front suspension than the other 4Runners. I don't know why they would go thru the trouble of modifying a Pro and trying charge you an extra $8,400 for it. Most LR Pro's are selling at close to $10,000 above MSRP these days anyway. I see no reason to modifying a Pro from the dealer's perspective. I paid $2,000 above MSRP for a LR Pro on 5/13/21.

 

A pro suspension is added at the port and is a 1" lift. They are completely lying to you. All Pro's feature that 1" lift.

Would you buy a $8400 set of wheels? That's the question.

Yep. I wanted the Pro as well but they were selling way over MSRP and they come with the 1" lift in the front and the TRD Pro wheels. When I factored in that I would going with the 3" lift and 33's anyway it made way more sense to go with an ORP. I would have really liked to have that color because all of the colors I like are not available on the OR/ORP line but in the long run I'll probably end up painting it in a few years anyway.

 

Well, the manager specifically mentioned that it comes with a 1" lift from the factory but this vehicle will have an additional inch in the front and the back (back he didn't seem certain which i'll need to verify).

Regardless, that lift and the set of tires (not wheels) does not add up to $8,400 so that is just a pricing premium they are putting on the car given the demand.

I might as well just go for the 2022 ORP at MSRP at this point but still debating on this deal

You must have a big boner for that Lunar Rock to want to pay this kind of premium from a dealership that can't even give you the details of what is going on the vehicle. Crazy talk.

 

So they are trying to make it sound good saying they’re not charging over msrp.

However they will install all these as dealer add ons once it arrives at the dealer before someone buys it. At best this “lift kit” is worth $3k. They are just getting creative on how they want to screw the buyer. Then they’ll make you feel better by saying other dealers are charging $10k over msrp with no extras or lift package.

Unfortunately this is probably a dealership in California lol I had to go out of state to secure mine.

 

How the F would they know one is being made in Japan right now let alone have a claim to it?

They are sticking it to you without the lube.

 

For what it's worth you can put $8400 into an ORP and do the following:
1. REALLY nice suspension
2. Sliders
3. Skids
4. Tires/wheels
5. Roof rack
6. Lights
7. Snorkel
8. More lights? Why not.
9. Stickers.
10. Front bumper/winch
11. Maybe Still have money left over.

 

Ok, I have some more info here. So the aftermarket lift is coming from ORW (https://www.offroadwarehouse.com/Articles/escondido-ca) and the ORW kit will have a custom made flat plate that will give it a 1" lift only to the front, nothing to the back.

Total cost for this ORW KIT plus new set of Falken or BFG tires is just under $8K, not $8,400. Completely rip off and I am going to cancel my deal here.

I will likely wait for the 2022 ORP in MGM and do the lift and new set of wheels on my own

 

OP, we aren't trying to save the world from people willing to pay for it. We just want to educate so you aren't the person overpaying for it.

Will someone pay for it? Yep. Will they believe they got a good deal? That's what they will tell themselves and anyone who's listening just to cushion the blow.

That's ok, just don't make it your problem.

Spend time with us here, learn how to do it or at least what exactly you want to do, and that $8k will go so much further and you'll be so much happier. We really aren't trying to poo-poo on you, just that we don't want to see you rooked.

 

That's exactly what they said to me actually. other dealers are charging $10k over msrp without lift/wheel package. lol
and yes, it is a dealer in CA

Although it’s a bit late in the game for a 2021 lunar rock you can still find one at msrp or close if you’re willing to look out of state. A little research and patience will go a long way.

I agree with all the above posts, if you fall for it, then you are part of the problem with them being able to ask 10k over, or a add on basic spacer lift and tire & wheel package for $8400.00. Just sayin.

Yup, just cancelled and for your reference. This dealership was Toyota CARLSBAD in San Diego

 

I’ve bought 6 vehicles from one salesman there and always at msrp. They advertise that they have no markups. It’s only when they have them sent in for lift, rims and tires. It’s always the maxtrac spacer lift, crappy rims, and ok tires. Not worth half of what they wanna charge on those “builds” though. Such a rip off.

 

For comparison that same deal on a Pro from the same dealer 2 months ago was a $6500 markup. I know because I bought it. 1” spacers in the front to level and 275 KO2s.

Sales lady couldn’t adequately describe what they were going to do and I ultimately talked to the manager and Off Road Warehouse directly to confirm. Ended up pulling the trigger as I wanted the Pro and could afford it. Dealers theory is they are at least giving you something for the markup vs their competitors.

The add ons are clearly not worth the extra cost but it was either pay extra in the Western US for a pro or travel to Midwest to find one at msrp. I chose to pay and have no regrets.

 

I don't want to sound like a TRDPRO hater but I will say my TRD Offroad with ELKA are by far better than TRDPRO with Fox shocks.
If you are willing to lift I would vote for an TRD Offroad and spend the money on a high-end suspension (normally priced around $3000-4000). Even TRD Offroad stock wheels are more functional than TRDPRO wheels. But I agree that TRDPRO wheels look good.
Also you can go with after market full skids that are much better than TRDPRO skids as they are stronger and has maintenance cut out so you don't have to remove the skid plate for oil changes.

Almost six weeks and 2,300 miles on the 2021 LR Pro and I like the way it rides, the way it drives and how it looks! I will remove the predator steps and may add sliders. I may remove the upper level tubes on the Pro roof rack soon. I recently saw a great looking mod that streamlines the Pro roof rack to one level of tubes. The Pro exhaust is somewhat annoying, but tolerable! Otherwise I am very happy with the choice and am relieved to not feel inclined to modify it!

 

Man that's jacked, if I was going to buy a Pro, I would want it totally stock, meaning the specific Toyota OEM Pro upgrades.

I went through the same thing with that dealership. Ended up not buying one. I’m on the waiting list for a Pro at Freeman Toyota in Santa Rosa. They told me there is no mark up on their Pros. We’ll see how that goes…..

 

how are the off road wheels more functional than the pro wheels?
