How can one remove these caps without munching the little slot?

I just had to do this. Ours came with the "Pro" wheels. However I found 2 of the lug holes have places for a panel tool or screwdriver. Use a towel if you are worried about slipping.
    Good luck,
    Ryan

I munched one of the slots by trying to turn a srewdriver blade in there. Pulling on it or pushing towards the tire wasnt possible because there was nothin g to give leverage.

Too bad I wasnt watching closely enough when i got my new tires. Those guys removed the caps so quickly and damage-free that it seemed there was a trick to it

The lug nuts on our wheels are exposed (even with the center cap on). You may want to see owners manual. I have never owned those (your) wheels.

There should be a tool in the accessory bag for the jack to remove them. Or, maybe try a plastic panel tool, as it's less likely to scratch something.

Another thing you could try is tapping them out from the back side with the wheel off the vehicle.

Even with exposed lugnuts, the center caps interfere with getting a socket on. Edit: at least the sockets that I have

What ended up working best was a plastic panel tool.

I should have thought of the tool bag. Ill root around in there to look. Sufficient study of the manual may also help, lol

There’s a tool in the OEM toolkit in the jack compartment. It looks like a long handled teaspoon with a flat curved end. That’s your pry bar against a lug nut to pop off the hub cover.

Awesome! Thanks for pointing that out. I was checking out my spare the other day and remember seeing that tool. At first I thought it was s tire spoon. I was thinking “damn, toyota thinks 4runner owners must be pretty hardcore to be spooning on tires by hand. Lol

but now it makes perfect sense!
