Picked up my 2019 off-road 10ish days ago and I am absolutely loving it. Coming from a 2014 Tacoma, so very familiar with the 4.0L. 4Runner was the natural choice as I didn’t want to leave Toyota, but needed more cab space as we prepare to have a family eventually. I also needed a lower jump entry for my black lab.

Love everything about the 2019’s EXCEPT for the headunit. The entune works fine but the screen is so small and no CarPlay.

I evaluated the following headunit options.
-Beatsonic addition to get CarPlay with the stock headunit
    -Alpine Halo9
    -Pioneer dmh-7600nex
    -Cartrim T9 or T10
    -Dasaita px6 for 4Runners

No hate meant of these units, as they’re all great choices, but I just wanted to detail my decision process in case it helps others.

Beatsonic was a no go for me just due to the retaining of the factory screen.

Alpine Halo9 is a nice unit but the all-in price of $1,500 was too painful to me for a 480p screen that somewhat blocks the vents (research shows it doesn’t block function but the look was tough for me at the price). Also no wireless CarPlay without an add-on.

Pioneer dmh-7600 was something I highly considered as I’ve always had a good experience with pioneer. I actually ordered it and had second thoughts on the floating tablet look and cancelled. The screen quality and sound are excellent though. Loved that it had wireless CarPlay standard as well.

cartrim t9/t10 was initially my first choice. Love the way they look (looks like the 2020+ head units honestly). However, a good friend of mine has one in his 2017 and had so many issues. The support/response was great when he had issues, but I wanted to try something different just to see.

Ended up ordering the Dasaita for a few reasons. It is extremely popular on Tacomaworld and people have tended to have really solid experiences with it. It retains that factory look which I really appreciate. I was able to order it on Amazon (gave me return confidence) and added a 3 year warranty for piece of mind. As I said earlier, I ordered the pioneer initially but cancelled it. My thought was the Dasaita is half the price and I personally like the look better. If it doesn’t give me any issues, I’m happy. If it breaks, I’ll get a replacement with the warranty and sell to move to something different.

install took me about 90 minutes today in the garage. Watched the T9 install video to learn how to take out the stock head unit and prep the new headunit with clips, vents, etc. Everything fit really well and the prep process was easy.

At first I was a bit frustrated going to plug up the cabling because the videos don’t show it well, but it’s actually super easy. The clips can only fit in specific areas and all the cables to plug together (like for the camera) are labeled).

Before screwing/clipping it all back together I tested hazards, music, AC, the USB, CarPlay (wired and wireless), auto dimming for headlights, and reverse camera. Reverse camera was the only one that gave me an error - I had plugged the wrong camera input to the wrong connector. Just had to swap those yellow cables, confirm I was all good, and then I clipped/screwed the unit all the way in.

    Initial impressions:
    -Audio sounds better than stock
-screen is very crisp and much better definition than the stock unit
-love the ability to pull the rear camera up anytime as I had the anytime camera button in my Tacoma and loved it
-factory look is amazing - can’t tell it is aftermarket except for the Dasaita at the bottom
-the knobs are the only thing that feel plasticky, everything else feels really top notch
-CarPlay is awesome. So sweet to have Gaia, Spotify, google maps, etc.
-Reverse camera appears barelyyy stretched (have to look for it). But the high definition screen shows the stock reverse camera is lacking on the 2019’s and isn’t very high definition. No issue seeing the camera output and reversing just fine, just wish the reverse camera was better quality to match the new headunit quality.
-like that the blue lights near the side buttons match the oem blue color on the Speedo
-android head units do a lot and I have a lot to explore...

Just day 1 for me obviously, but didn’t see much about it on here so wanted to upload pictures and my thoughts. I’ll keep uploading thoughts as I get more experience/use out of it. Once I understand the android functionality better I’ll try to upload a video as well

Blacked out grill and rear emblem. More on the way!
Thanks for the breakdown! One of my first gripes about my '14 is the head unit. I hope you give us a 30 day review, so we can get an idea what you think after using it for a bit.

You will lose your CD player for sure. Was not important to me as I don’t use CD’s but if they are vital to you the aftermarket isn’t very supportive of them anymore

Probably 6 drives in for a total of about 200 miles and still loving it. No quirks or software issues. CarPlay (wireless or wired) boot up right away on startup. Backup camera pops up immediately when going to reverse, even if you just powered it on

only gripe I had was specific to any aftermarket head unit which was CarPlay was brighter than I like at night. I really like a dark cabin when driving at night. The screen does auto dim when you turn the headlights on and you can change brightness levels, but I wanted the ability to go super dark. Changed the settings to allow me to turn the screen off without powering off the unit. Also downloaded the “Twilight” app from the Google play store (since it’s an android tablet) which let me set 8pm-7:30am to automatically be dimmer (whatever percentage I want down to black) than the stock settings allow. Pretty sweet

Figured out how to adjust the brightness scale, contrast, etc.

Settings let’s you get to factory settings and then the code to get in to change them is “126”. Lots of stuff to change in there haha but haven’t played around too much.

So far still really enjoying this. I’ll make a 20 or 30 day video once I have the functionality down

I did not know this was available for the 4runner. I like my pioneer but this looks better (factory like).

If only there was similar for my Tundra.

Same - I’ve always been a pioneer guy but wanted to stay OEM style and give it a try

there’s a big thread on the tundra forum about Dasaita but I think they’re just putting the standard 10.2” screen in, not specifically built to be OEM since the dash is bigger. Could always give it a try but a 7600 or 8600 pioneer will look good in there too

If i do anything in the Tundra, it will be a kenwood dmx1057xr. That seems to be the best option at the moment.

What about the steering wheel controls and hands free calling? Do these work still? Is it compatible with the Sirius XM radio?

Yep - the steering wheel controls work. You can reprogram them too if you want.

I just use CarPlay but the hands free calling there has been great. Wife says I sound fine with it and I can hear plenty crisp through CarPlay.

I honestly do not know on SiriusXM, I really just use Spotify and pandora. I’ll see if I can figure that out. Is SiriusXM an app you can download google play, it so it’ll work

2 week checkin, all working awesome! First time having wireless carplay and it is sweet. I bought a center console wireless phone charger and just keep my phone in there while I operate everything off of Carplay. Really helps me not check my phone.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08V88HWRJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8

No issues, skips, etc. from the unit. Boots up fast and goes to wireless carplay right away. Have played around with a few other features. Will do a 30 day review video here soon.

Still my only complaint is the knobs feel a little light (easier to twist) in their movement compared to the stock knobs. Everything else feels and operates in a premium fashion.

How about som pics of this thing. It seems great. And where did you buy it. I find a lot of sketchy sites when i search for the head unit.

Here are a few I grabbed just now - will have better views of it when I do a video or course. One photo shows the door ajar - cool that it gives you alerts on the screen when you open it.

I also showed what the screen looks like when you’re not in CarPlay. To my understanding, you can customize backlight colors and how it appears. I did move the android Home Screen apps around so I would have zlink (CarPlay), a screen dimmer app Twilight, and the camera app on the main page.

the camera app is cool because you can view the backup camera whenever you want. If you run a front camera you can also view it in there as well.

I bought it on Amazon - I prefer doing that even if spending a bit more just due to return policy and buyer protections.

I got this one. Didn’t bother with the HD as the screen looked great in TRD John’s videos. And the “non-HD” screen is prime shipping. I will say the screen feels plenty HD to me and I work on a 4K monitor haha.

they have a silver version prime too if you don’t have an off-road or black interior trim and want it to be silver.

if you’re thinking about ordering, I would wait a few days though. I’ve been going back and forth with them just learning the functionality and asking questions since I enjoy tech. They don’t have a good install video out there yet (I just followed the car trim ones), so they asked me to make one and offered to provide a discount code for ordering on Amazon to share.

Confirmed with Dasaita that you can play Sirius XM through the app:
    https://www.siriusxm.com/servlet/Sa...ontent&cid=1282009809810&pagename=SXM/Wrapper

It is my understanding there is also a Sirius XM carplay app - but I haven't used it (I don't have an Sirius XM prescription, I really just use Spotify or Audible in Carplay).

How are you liking it so far? Bonus for me is my wife has a new car that has unlimited XM and can run the app too so I can cancel mine and reduce my bill.

Very happy with it so far. Haven’t had any issues. I really just use CarPlay which auto boots up if you set it up, but sometimes go to the main screen for the anytime reverse camera, downloaded Netflix if I’m parked for awhile, etc.

I want to get a Bluetooth OBDII reader so I can run an app on the unit like torque to see all vehicle stats

Thanks for the write-up and review!

I am interested in buying one for my '18 Ltd... I have never been happy with the stock speaker phone, calls have been filled with static and the volume is poor. How is the carphone/speaker phone on this unit?

    Many thanks!

It has a built in Mic that I take CarPlay calls from. Haven’t heard myself since I’m the only on that drives it, but I’m told it sounds fine.

my package from Amazon also came with an external Mic. I see a lot of people with aftermarket headunits run those to right behind their steering wheel on top of that plastic bit. I would assume it would pick up voice really well right there

    Great review, thank you.

I still have the stock unit. I rarely use it. After nearly three years of ownership, I just figured out how to turn the screen completely off, which I greatly appreciate while driving at night.

Workout! Also, good reviews and photos! For some reason, I like your radar mounting point. Well, same spot closer to driver. I have mine up high but thinking about going back to where yours is. They sell a little phone mount thing that can adjust angle that makes for a perfect prop if you want yours off the dash itself.

Very cool. How hard was the install though? Also if you have an OR you then lose the factory metallic grey trim yeah?

Sorry for the delay, had to borrow a buddies dongle to test on my iPhone but yes it does work. I’ve just been using CarPlay for everything or Bluetooth if I’m not in CarPlay but the kit comes with an adapter for the stock usb and aux area to hook up to the stereo

Install was pretty easy. Probably 90-120 minutes including following along with a video!

correct. I have an OR. I actually prefer this matte black as it matches the black that is right below the head unit (around the A/C on off button and airflow mode change).

you can paint it which I initially considered but I like this less shiny version haha.

they sell silver as well for the people who want to keep silver similar to their SR5’s. Haven’t seen it in person to compare how accurate the silver is but it looks the same in the photos I saw when researching

I used to run one of those mounts that attached to the rear view mirror and it sat below. Was like a $100 mount. Switched to this $8 sticky pad and loving how easy it is to take the radar down and put it back when I want (I put away when at a hiking trailhead).
