Shovel choices ? I'm curious

(1) Long handled 'round point'

(2) Short round point - with 'grip handle'

(3) Long handled 'trenching' shovel

(4) Short trenching shovel - with 'grip handle'

(5) Other

What contributed most to your choice? IE: Your height? Ease of use? Price? etc:

i figured i would mostly need it for driving on the beach and i wanted it to fit across the back storage area because i didnt have any plans to get a roof rack that i could mount the shovel on. it fits perfectly across the back behind the seats. ive recently got involved with a search and rescue org so i will probably be using the shovel more. if i get a roof rack i will probably get a longer handled shovel so internal storage wont be an issue. also im 6' 5", so a longer handle will be easier on the ole back!

I would definitely go the with long handled shovel. It is most ergonomic for digging plus they are great for leaning on and watching others work! They are also the number one choice for City workers worldwide.

 

ok I'll be serious... I'm assuming your concerned about dirt/sand and not snow in which case a long handled pointed shovel... Winter time (snow) definitely the wider flat one hmmm guess I'd have to say long handle again...

I keep a GI folding shovel (aka E-tool or Entrenching Tool) in my kit. I bought mine at a Gun Show but you might find one on Ebay or at an Army Surplus Store.

A month or so ago, my off road group went and did some trail maintenance. I brought a full size shovel with me plus my DR chainsaw. Didn't need the shovel at all. The Chainsaw was put to use on smaller downed trees.

Thankfully we had a guy along on the ride that had a Stihl gas powered chainsaw. He made short work out of a couple HUGE trees that had fallen the night before blocking the main road to the trail.



One thing I forgot grab was my steel chain. You want use a chain for dragging logs. A recovery strap or rope can be used but there is a good chance it will get torn up. Another member in our group had his chain and I used it pull sections of that huge tree off the road with my 4Runner.

Have now added the full length shovel and mounts. Had the folding shovel, with pick, and electric chain saw already. Probably won't carry any chain, but am willing to sacrifice one strap for for those nasty jobs.

 

Yeah the chain seems to be unneeded weight. I too don't want to carry it in 4Runner.

 

I have to add my .02 cents: I have a well used Army folding shovel from a previous life and a Beaver style one that gets used around the house for yard work.

 

We have both the Krazy beaver and the small compact folding sog. The sog is our pooper shovel in loose areas where we can and it stays in an outside pocket on the trasharoo (we don’t keep it on the truck unless actually going out camping ) the beaver is for digging out if we get stuck stirring our soupy fire pit before bed, fending off grizzlies (please do not do this) and conversational piece of why we need it. But they work for us and we got a blemished deal on the krazy beaver so it was like 40.00 shipped maybe 50

Those darn east Germans... there shovels are simple but very good and sturdy and for under ten bucks!

 

Folding military shovel here for over 25 years. Handle is starting to split but still works. Fits in a bag behind my seat.

 

I picked up another shovel, in addition to the Krazy Beaver, at the overland expo. Spent the big bucks on a DMOS Pro.
