I guess you are mistaken by KDSS.
X-REAS are no big deal. If they fail you can change to regular SR5 shock. Or if you need lift you can replace with Bilstien 5100s;

The physical switch is a drop in replacement, but I have no idea about the programming. One could technically re-flash the ECU and its internal microcontrollers, but I think Toyota prevents that with the TIS Techstream system somehow. You can only recalibrate an ECU with an update for that specific ECU part number (similar to head unit updates).

For example, if the non-auto ecu was 020, you could only flash it with the updated 021 file but not the file for the auto ecu 040 or 041.

It would be nice if we as vehicle owners were able to just select features on a drop down in Techstream and flash the ECU.

 

What's also funny is that several models that don't have auto headlights have a dummy photoelectric sensor in the dash, but the wiring harness is still plugged into it. Meaning you can get a sensor (factory Toyota part or in my case, a cheap Chinese replacement) and add it in about thirty seconds. Now my dash doesn't dim when I turn my headlights on during the day. Strange decisions.

Nah. Pro drives much different from the OR and the OR drives much different from the SR5. I've owned two of the three. The later stuff of the venture and trail, maybe.

Some models have the dummy plug with the full wiring run attached (Premiums), some have only half and need to complete the circuit (Base). Strange decisions indeed.

By my estimation for the 14-19MY, Toyota has at least 10 different dash harness setups, and 2-3X engine bay harness setups based upon trim for the 4Runner. The variations between the base and premium trims is only a handful of wires/circuits (8x; photodiode, heated seat, auto-dimming rear view mirror, etc. ) , and between the OR/TRAIL and SR5 maybe 15X circuits (Rear locker, transfer case differences). Limited dash is different due to a different ignition system and the parking sensors.

Again, like I said earlier, why make so many. I don't know everything, nor can one get into the head of a Toyota Engineer, but in more simple world, it should be;

1X version of engine bay with ability to plug in ancillary components like the front parking sensors,
2X dash (conventional ignition & smart key)
2X radio harness (Base & JBL).
1X driver floor harnesses can be the exact same for all trims
2X Passenger floor harness (Again, base & JBL audio for sub)
1X driver door harness
1X passenger door harness
1X rear passenger
1X rear driver
1X tailgate
1X roof

It would be far more lean and cost effective to produce 1-2 variants of "parts" with a few extra wires and unused connectors than the design, harness boards, etc. for 25 different variants.

That approach would allow Toyota to more easily adjust trims, and allow vehicle owners on the back end to purchase parts to upgrade their 4Rs or take it to a dealer and have stuff added, which is a win in parts sales for Toyota and in billable service hours for the dealerships. Downside is more people are likely to hold onto their vehicles longer if a newer feature can be added.

 

Or just trow a full-time four-wheel-drive on a TRD OR Premium and keep what's already on it.

 

OR put the OR suspension and wheels on a Limited so you can keep all the luxo features that the Limited comes with. I like having ventilated seats, seat position memory, dual zone climate control, etc.

The only driving difference in all of the trucks is the suspension. The SR5 and the OR have the exact same suspension, but the OR can be optioned with KDSS (bigger swaybars means flatter cornering on the road and better articulation off the road). The Pro has upgraded Bilstein/Fox shocks and different coils up front. And no KDSS.

Everything else is superficial.

 

Yeah this is the easier way. Have to permanently disconnect the XREAS but most don't seem to miss theirs.

I'm not an expert on 5th gens, so this may have already been a thing, but no mileage limitation on corrosion warranty? I want that for my 4th gen lol

 

They make it sound good but I believe it is under the 36 month section. Meaning you can put 100k on it in 3 years, but once you hit the three years the corrosion part is done. They know its more of a time rather than mileage deal.

 

Well, I guess its covered under 60 months. Thats not bad considering where you live and depending on what's in the perimeters. I did not read the fine print. Thanks for checking.

I'm aware. Differences are differences. Cosmetic changes are changes, nonetheless. Hence, they're different cars. The SR5 without KDSS and a OR with are two very different driving vehicles. The core differentiated trims are different. "Parts bin specials", disagree. SR5 and the OR and significantly different. As is the Limited and Pro trims. The Venture and Trail, well yeah they did what everyone does and try to knock off the Pro.

 

How's the reliability been on the Taco, if I may ask?

 

I wonder what the HP and torque ratings are with a supercharger? Must of done something? Titanium internals? A higher RPM. That’s why it needs KDSS!

I feel like we're saying the same thing, but maybe I need to clarify what I mean. For example:

1. The difference between a Wrangler Sport and a Rubicon: the Rubicon gets nicer interior amenities and packages, electric swaybar disconnect, upgraded shocks/coils, front and rear locking Dana 44 axles, a 4:1 low range transfer case, real all-terrain tires, heavy duty steel bumpers.
2. The difference between an F150 and a Raptor: the Raptor has a re-tuned high output 3.5 engine with 450hp/510tq, factory long-travel suspension, F/R lockers, 35" all-terrains, and factory flared fenders.
3. The difference between a 4Runner OR premium and a TRD Pro: some mediocre Bilstein or Fox shocks and a plastic black bar covering the grill. Maybe some special one-off paint.

Do you see what I mean?

Not a fan of the new Trd Sport trim package or the new Color for 2022 Trd Pro but Toyota will sell ship load off them

 

Maybe we aren't saying the same thing because I have no idea what you're trying to say here.

 

Not to mention the OR Premium can have KDSS, and TRD Pro cannot.

 

haha I was eluding to another thread where some gentleman made some incoherent rant about wanting to buy 4 doors, and then he mixed in the fact that he is married... as if that made it somehow different. He then disappeared like a fart in the wind, never to be seen from again.
