    Hi guys,

I just bought a 1990 4Runner that I'm real excited about. I took it in for a smog check (california) and it failed the visual inspection on the catalytic converter. The emissions were within standards, but the guy at the shop said he couldn't verify that the catalytic converter was legal.

The following information was stamped on the cat:

    CA/CE 99000
    94000 06/06

    Do I legit fail?

    1990 4Runner 3.0L V6 153k miles

    thanks in advance

Yea, I've been looking at that database all afternoon trying to figure out which one it is. I can't seem to identify it.

    Thank you for replying

ML, I've been going back and forth with magnaflow via phone and email and they were finally able to identify the CAT and corresponding EO number. Taking it back to the smog check place tomorrow for the certificate. Thank you for suggesting I do that! And I'm also grateful to be a new member of this awesome community.

The CA DMV does have a form, allowing an owner to "exempt" their vehicle from performing a smog check (I was a DMV Tech for 5 years), do to being outta state (REG 5103). I too have a 1990. I had a smog check performed, with the smog tech "failing" my girl, because the original manufacturer's label was missing under the hood (their discretion), even though she passed all other parameters. I remembered, my "brother" needed to "use" my 'Runner, in "MONTANA", and simply exempted myself from a smog test until, next year. Good old Arnold did away with the 30 year rolling smog exemption rule.
