White paint

My 21 has paint chips all over the front grill and front hood area. Is this a paint defect or am I just unlucky?

 

White is notoriously the worst for quality & durability. I recommend finding a Xpel installer near you. Get the paint corrected and front wrapped & there will be no more problems.
Our black has withstood a keying and repaired itself with hot water! It is self cleaning & repairing. Perfect!

Better take it to dealership. Toyota had a recall

Pics please? I know it's been there in the past and Toyota had a recall vs many other manufacturers simply denied.

 

How long would that take for the dealership to repaint?

 

How bad is it? This is 8 years of harsh winters, snow, and gravel.

 

What do you expect ? White is the fastest color…

Mine is white and yes it does chip easily.

I installed the 3M precut clear bra myself with the help of my boy.

It was a very difficult process that required a high level of patience, but it turned out pretty good.

 

It wasn't a dealer repaint. We took it in for Xpel before 1,000 miles & they corrected it for us. Look up the authorized Xpel installer and see what they recommend. Unless you have a paint recall as stated above.

I have xpel on mine I recommend you get it. Has prevented most rock chips, my 20 had a lot of chips. My 21 has been good so far. However I got pelted with large goofball size rocks on the freeway this week from a douche who didn’t secure his gravel load properly. Will be getting repainted.

I know this is an abuse test. But I trust in it. The high end Xpel (yes, there are levels) is 8mil thick! You will be surprised what you find. Unless it cracked the bumper...

sorry I’m a little confused. I have xpel on my 21, it has held up and I’m quit happy with it. My 2020 did not have it and I had chips everywhere. However on my 21 last week I got pelted with goofball sized stones at 80MPH as a truck in front of me lost a large portion of their load when they hit a sharp elevation change/hump on the freeway because they didn’t secure their load properly/legally. I have penetrations in the film into the bumper. Not many, if it wasn’t for the xpel my front bumper and hood would of been destroyed. The parts of the hood and pillars and windshield that did not have coverage of xpel are chipped badly. I will have to have part of the hood, bumper and pillar repainted. However they xpel held up very well.

 

I was unaware of the extent of the damage. Glad you are okay. We have insurance for a reason (unless you got a plate or truck #).
Sorry this happened & post pics of before & after removal of Xpel. I am curious what you find.

The 3M bra I applied is pretty thick material.

I check my vin number on a regular basis, mainly because of the fuel pump recall which has been done and I haven't seen any paint recalls on my white 2018 SR5.

 

Not to be rude but there is a huge difference in Xpel and 3m. 3m makes some great stuff but Xpel is another level.

Yes, I've heard that too. I've never had the opportunity to use Xpel, but if I do another bra, I will consider that.

To be honest, I'd be hard pressed to do it again. It was a PITA.

 

We had ours installed for us & have just enjoyed it. We need to bring it back for more ceramic coating (cleaning/ renewal) but otherwise it washes itself with heavy rains or snow! This wrap is amazing. I have stated before that we only did 80% ish of the vehicle. We didn't do the roof or hatch as those aren't impact areas. We may have them done just to wrap it all. Here is a few weeks of no washing and a heavy rain!

I was told to avoid white 4 runners .
The white paint is a single stage paint. and really thin.

 

I'll see what the dealership here in St.Peters MO says about it. Hopefully Toyota will take care of it.

 

Toyota denies actual rust claims, I seriously doubt they care.

Prepare for disappointment.

 

Just for safety I stopped buying White vehicles even though I didn't have problems.

 

It's typical shit Toyota paint. Across all 5 I've owned they've all had garbage paint jobs.

 

my previous vehicle, a 2017 Tacoma was white. Worst colour even for paint correction as, get this, Toyota used a single stage paint for their white vehicles. That's right, the color and clear coat are one and the same.
