Planning a trip to Flagstaff, AZ and Colorado this summer for trails and camping. But other than that I drive all hwy. Do the E rated ride that rough?
I’m sticking with stock size 265/70/17

    thnx for any advice

4 ply. 10 ply will be heavier, worse mpg, more expensive, noisier, stiffer drive. stock size works well.

The 4 ply are very soft and were a little too floaty on the road for me, I will be getting E on my next set.

I live in Flagstaff, wheel a ton in this region, and run AT3s. Mine are E-loads.

I've seen too many flats caused by rocks and embedded sticks.

They don't seem too heavy to me at all, but I've run E-loads for over a decade, so maybe I'm just used to them.

I agree, off-roading in my area often entails driving over sharp lava rocks.

I will stick with E load tires.

IMHO, It really depends on where your located as to appropriate tire selection. If I still lived in the Midwest, then I would probably just run car tires.

Do they have 6ply rated (Load C) ones?

I have 4 ply rated Falken Wildpeaks and feel too weak for sharp rocks / sticks sticking out at the edges. But excellent for on-road or gravel road. I feel same comfort as the stock all seasons.

I have used 10 ply rated (Load E) BFG KO2 in the past and it was too firm to my taste. I love 6 ply rated (Load C) which is a nice balance of comfort and strong off-road.

I'm also thinking of 8 ply rated (Load D) Goodyear Duratracs next. Other than complains of getting them little louder with miles they seems to be excellent in both offroad and winter conditions. Since I live in CO 3 peak mountain snow flake rated tires are a must for me.

If you pound on sharp rock and construction sites or in other ways put your tires in harms way, then E Rated tires are well worth the cost & weight. Unless you like dealing with tire failure in back of beyond.
If you are a pavement and well graded and maintained dirt road kine, then no need.

E and just run a lower PSI so they don’t ride like wagon wheels (chalk test to find the lowest psi with a good wear pattern). I run AT3’s in E at around 30psi on road; ride fairly smooth. They also still flex/squish pretty well Offroad down around 12psi… some E’s don’t air down well (sidewalls don’t want to give), has not been the case for my AT3’s.

Thanks for everyone who provided feedback on the pros and cons with going with the E rated version of this tire.

One more question, would there be any significant difference in the noise level on the highway between the E and the 4 ply ?

My guess is that the tread pattern would be the biggest factor rather than the ply rating.

Lots of people say the E loads tend to get louder at around 8-10k miles. Probably not much difference when they're new.

No difference. If you run them below 25psi they would get noisy. At 30 - 32psi my KO2's are pretty quiet.
