Need better OR tires. Opinions?

So I just posted a thread that people help me out on, asking if I can squeeze a little more power and torque out of the engine of a pro but I just ordered and is currently in at the dealer. The only other issue I'm going to have is the tires. I live in Michigan and I do hit the big sand dunes up here, I also go to an island designed for off-roading enthusiasts with some rocks, and it's Michigan so I have to manage a lot of snow and ice in the winter time. I'm selling a 2018 Raptor and buying this 4Runner. My Raptor currently has DuraTrac Wranglers. They've been amazing on Sand, snow, ice, and pretty good with the mud I've encountered so far. But I don't think that's what I want to go with here since my raptor wheels are huge in comparison I feel like that size will go through anything pretty well, so I'll need to be more focused with these smaller TRD wheels and tires. The Terra grapplers I'll just immediately sell as new. I'm considering Cooper stt pro, open countrys, Firestone mt2s and kumho mt71 mts. Is anyone else running any of these tires and can give me some feedback on them? Thank you again in advance.

 

No Idea on those M/Ts. Here in CO as far as I've seen people love GY Wranglers DuraTrac. I guess they are considered top of the line. I want to try them at some point. Only problem i've heard is it gets loud with miles. I guess it won't be a big deal. My fried got GY Wranglers DuraTrac LT285/70R17 Load D, they are true 33in tall vs my BFG & Falken are not taller as Duratracs.

From my personal experience my favorite all-rounder is BFG KO2. ( I use BFG KO2 LT285/70R17 Load C). Absolutely love them.

And my fav on road tire is Falken Wildpeak AT3W (I use P285/70R17 Standard Load on my Limited)
They both have 3 peak mountain snow flake rating so ideal for CO weather.

 

I have toyo at3’s and I’m very happy with them.

 

I got Cooper Evo M/Ts. Awesome tires off-road. Lil too much for everyday driving.

 

My Toyos At3 were great until around 8k miles. turned loud way to fast

 

I hear good things about Cooper in general, aside from uneven wear on some models. EDIT: I believe it's the STT MAX that tends to wear unevenly.

If you're looking at the Toyos, I would recommend taking a look at the Yokohama Geolander MR as well. They're priced very well, and I'm absolutely loving mine! They feel great on the road, and so far I'm very impressed off-road.

Did you rotate them at 5K? I have around 18K on a set, and while they're a little bit noisy, it has never really changed.

Falken Wildpeaks here ! no issues at all (and a pic "because everybody likes pictures")

 

I would like to mention my Falken Wildpeak MT’s in the 285/70/17 load range E. I have about 15k on them and they are absolutely outfuckingstanding in full sun, partially cloudy, and on occasion slight rain. They also look like they belong on a 4x4, even at the mall, and REI Outdoor gear.

 

Nitto Grapplers came on my 4R and they work well off-road but are a bit noisy (not bad) on the roads. My son and I put BF Goodrich KO2s on his jeep wrangler and they are the best off-road highway tire I have ever driven on. Will likely put a set of KO2s on my 4R when the Grapplers wear out. My recommendation is to pick a tire that suits your needs, as there are several good options out there.

 

KO2's seem to be the go-to tire, but in my experience, they are not the best in snowy conditions - at least they were not for me. I now have Nitto Ridge Grapplers and am very pleased with on/off-road performance (in almost all weather conditions).

Went with Cooper stt pro. They're no louder than the grapplers, smooth ride. My Raptor came with the Goodrich ko2 S, I was really never impressed with them except when it came to sand. They did really well at the dunes, otherwise average at best. Switched the Raptor over to the DuraTrac, I never had any complaints but they weren't exactly aggressive in my opinion. So we'll give these a try, they look aggressive but we'll see how they perform in Winter and mud and climbing rocks.

 

Looks great! Those will be excellent in mud and rocks. I wouldn't expect much in the way of winter traction, at least compared to a 3PMSF all terrain or an actual winter tire. Mud tires generally perform well in deep snow, but not good on packed snow and ice.

 

Yeah I was wondering about that, I know they are Snow rated. But I don't live in Utah or Colorado, I live in Michigan so the snow I deal with is generally between 1 and 4 in. With the occasional dropping of a foot a couple times a year. I wasn't impressed with the ko2s in regards to snow but I have to give the DuraTrac a nod in that it did really well whether it was an inch of snow or 15 in.,especially since it had to move around a crewcab Raptor with a lot of extra weight. Hopefully these will do at least as well as the Duretrac.

 

I have consistently heard that Duratracs are better than KO2's in snow. Just looking at them, they have more siping which surely helps.

I had KO2's for 2 winters, and while they were much better than the OEM Dunlops, they weren't as good as the Yokohama Geolander AT's I had on my previous 4runner.

In my opinion, if winter driving is a factor, you're going to want a set of 3PMSF all terrains.. Or, a set of dedicated winter tires. I have MT's on right now, but I'll be putting my Toyo AT3's back on once the snow flies again.

 

Those look mean! As far as snow, I ran the previous version of this tire (the STT) on my old ZJ and they were fantastic in deep snow and slush. We had a few big snows when I had them, and I was surprised at what I was able to get through. And you know that berm of slushy snow that forms between the lanes on the highway? They cut through that like BUTTAH. Normally I feel changing lanes through that can be sketchy, but those felt incredibly surefooted. On the other hand, on packed snow and ice not so much. They just didn't have enough sipping or biting edges, so caution was needed as it was easy to break the tires loose.

I ran Duratracs after that, the Duras were not quite as good in the deep stuff, but WAY better on the packed and icy stuff. I would have to WANT them to break loose, otherwise they just grabbed.

 

Discount tire did it around 4800. I have free balance and rotation with them. A young kid did the work so is possible he put them on the wrong corners, lol

 

Yeah, who knows with those guys. I also rotate differently than normal because I think it's important to reverse the direction of the tires for even wear. I don't really have any evidence that I'm right, but my tires have worn evenly and slowly since I started doing it this way.

 

I went with the wild peaks and love them
I had the open country's and they were great but the deal on the falkens was to good to pass up

I need to get new A/T tires and am dead set on the KO2, but wondering whether to get 265 or 275. I kinda need it asap and the dealers close to me only have 265 in stock, so 275 would take a little longer. I currently have 265 and the jump to 275 seems rather small and it will cost ~$80 more for a set. Is it worth it? Also, if I jump to 275, will I need to replace by spare 265 tire as well? Lastly, are $229 (265) and $243 (275) for 70R17 E tires the usual prices?

 

Just saw cooper came out with new rugged trek? Anyone know much about those?

 

Those costs are consistent with Discount Tire here in the Houston area. Including tax it comes to a $60.62 difference. Only you can decide if its worth it to you but it would be to me. I personally wouldn't bother changing the spare unless it's over 3 years old in which case that's as long as I keep tires anyway, no matter their wear.

Another new 4Runner owner here. Picked up a Limited Nightshade and the only thing I am greatly disappointed in is Toyota’s choice in standard issue tires, Dueler H/T D684. They look tame and the reviews are terrible. Unfortunately, it looks like the pickings are slim for the 20” rims. Toyo Open Country A/T III looks like the only decent option. Anyone have experience with these on 20” rims?
