1991 4Runner

Hey everyone!

I'm a Nurse in the SoCal area and I recently purchased a 1991 4Runner Manual 4x4 ("Walt") to become my camping vehicle. I also plan on setting up as the pseudo medic tent whenever me and my friends go out to the dunes. Walt runs great, the only reason why his last owner sold him to me was because he has a tacoma camper he's living in now (and we're actually friends now). Little to no rust. The engine was redone by a previous owner and has 226,000 miles on it. Quite the find.

Here are some things I would love to get done by the start of next snowboarding season:
Roof Racks with tent/awning
New Headlights/ roof light bar
Bull/Push Bar
Back-up Camera (backing up in a manual is risky business)
New All Terrain Tires

In 2022 I'll probably try to do a 3 inch lift and get some larger tires.

I'm planning to turn Walt into Heisenberg (For all my breaking bad fans). So let me know if all of this is even possible. I'm extremely new to the community and I would love a realistic opinion. I made sure to posted this same post in the 2nd Gen 4runner build group

I'm thinking for first bit of work I'll get some interior stuff and stickers. I wanna have the roof rack and tent installed before July! I wanna go look at some ghost towns over the 4th of July weekend

If you're going to be off-roading around "the dunes", definitely going to want a good brush guard, that covers your lights, as well as the radiator. A good, bright, light bar up top is a great help out there at night.
The "dunes" maybe are the ones near Glamis, just off I8? I lived over in Yuma for a long time. Some real good off roading to be had there. Take the road off I8 that goes north to the tourist shop in Glamis. Instead of turning left to go to the tourist shop, turn right. Goes to the Tumco (TUscon Mining COmpany=TUMCO ) abandoned mine shafts, but there's a lot of barely drivable roads out there. I used to go out there in my 87 4Runner, and I had a blast. Spent a lot of time down some of the shafts that are still "explorable". A good light source, and plenty of water. Amazing what they accomplished underground! Some of the shafts still have real big veins of turquoise in them too.
Watch out for the rattlers, though. They hide under bushes, and if you're "using" one for relief, it can be a shock to have a rattle snake come forth. Trust me on that one! I didn't think I could jump that far, or high, from a standing start!

There's also a real well maintained gravel road out to the American Girl gold mine. Their security on their own property is TIGHT. You can drive their road, but don't try to get in!

Just a side note: A wild horse out there took my left eye when I was on my way out to work on my bike one morning. I've been backing manuals since 74, from 92 with one eye, and I never had any trouble. Just have to have a well stretched out neck so you can turn it all the way round backwards

Anyone have any idea where I can find some roof racks for 2nd gen 4runners?

Your local pick a part is a great place to find factory style roof racks. I see them almost every trip. Recon other vehicles in the truck section and I’ll bet you’ll find something decent. You may have to modify to fit.

You need to do some searches on the subject. Seems most are doing it on their own, and in every instance it requires removal of the headliner. Which an upholsterer could do the R&R of if you're not prepared to do so. If you're going to do it - do it right - structurally sound, if you want to avoid a huge disappointment down the road. Pun not intended.
