No way in hell I would shell out that much for a 4R. There’s a brand new black 1SS six-speed Camaro sitting at a dealer near me for under 40k...,,,,,

I'm with you Bassguy. If I was struggling financially, or wanted a different vehicle anyway, or no longer needed one at all -- then this would be an amazing time to sell. My latest Vroom offer is literally $351 less than my OTD almost a year and 8K miles ago. That's incredible.

But I got the 4Runner for specific reasons that haven't changed. So what's the point? I mean, I'd like one with the new LED headlights, but am I going to go through the nightmare of selling this one then trying to negotiate another good deal (which may not be possible these days) on a 2021, and maybe settle for a color combo or something I don't like as much -- just to take advantage of these resale prices? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Something is seriously wrong with the market when that vehicle is listing for 51K. I've long observed that some people are dead set on buying used, almost like they're acting on some kind of principle, despite the fact that they'd often be financially better off buying new (e.g. lower interest rate, better resale etc etc). Are there really so many people so ignorant that they'd pay a price like this instead of buying a brand new one for many thousands of dollars less?! I mean, new ones ARE available. My local dealer has four at the moment, including an ORP for $45K (the MSRP). And a Limited for $2900 under MSRP. Nuts.

I believe you missed the point @GrayGhost was making. Imagine if you regularly drove further than the range of your EV. I haven't done the math, but I imagine my annual trip to Florida at 1400 miles each way would really suck if I added 8 or 12 hours of charge time. I know you said 4 hours for 1200 miles, but I have a hard time imagining an electric 4runner with a 600 mile range.

I can see hotels putting in chargers & charging you for the power. Hey, did I just find a new business? Lol Seriously I believe that is what will come. Just add it to the room charge.

Ahh, wasnt thinking about an electric runner. Was commenting on his seeing electric cars now sitting at charging stations now. If you regularly drive further than your electric range, then you bought the wrong tool :)

A ridiculously huge percentage of commuting falls well short of the range of current electric cars. And the average household has 2 vehicles.

Like, do what you gotta do, but I cant comprehend how there will be more than 10% market share of non electric vehicles very, very quickly.

That's fine for people who want to spend 2 or 3 days driving. But, I'll drive 1400 miles in 20-22 hours. Stopping a few times along the way for several hours is not really an option.

I agree. That's why I'm not anywhere near ready to buy an electric vehicle.

I agree with this. Electric is fine for regular commuting around town. I was just trying to explain why people like myself wouldn't want a vehicle that takes hours to refuel.

And, even with 2 vehicles, I would still want the option to travel with both.

VROOM upped their offer another $500 to $54860 for my Pro. I don't know if I can keep it now at that price. Since I rolled negative equity into it, I have a get out of jail free card. I love my Pro, but I feel like this is a huge opportunity to lower my debt and get way better gas mileage.

I went to drive a Subaru Crosstrek. You couldn't give me one for free. Great mpg, but thats about it. Felt very cheap to me. I would love to get out of my loan on the 4R, but the only other vehicle that I would drive that I could pay cash for is an Xterra. The one I found had only 38K miles and it was a 2012, but they wanted was more than its worth. I will give them until tomorrow to see if they drop their price a few thousand. Otherwise I will just keep my 4R.

Not a terrible human being, just a Karen.

This will probably blow your mind, but... I've started many vehicles(and driven) with dead batteries. I'll give you some time to try to figure that one out.

Ha! Currently driving a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek for five years and actually think it is a pretty good little car. Full time 4WD, a little added ground clearance, 30 mpg and a deceptive amount of interior space. Exactly five years old with 92,000 miles and not one repair needed. Adequate speed, but no power at all! Yes, it does feel cheap! I came from a new 2002 Volvo S80 sedan that I drove into the ground after 14 years to the Crosstrek and it was a major downgrade in that regard. I am sure the 4R will feel fast in comparison to the Crosstrek. My three teenage sons call it my lesbian car!

I will be trading the Crosstrek for a 2021 MGM or LR Pro, or a 2022 Pro (color unknown) before the year is up! Or I may try to make an offer on a neighbor's pampered 4th Gen V8 4R and make it a beast, and keep the civil Crosstrek. But, I really want a new one! I am 59 and I want all of the modern amenities in my last cool toy to hang my mountain bike on and venture onward!

I don't have any hate towards Tesla, but I'm certainly not sold on them over Toyota. Also, I don't see how the entire world can go electric as it doesn't seem anywhere near sustainable. Renewable/green energy sources don't generate power nearly fast enough to completely switch the grid. And if every vehicle is eventually electric, that's an astronomical amount of extra power that will be needed. Batteries themselves contain lithium and cobalt which aren't exactly unlimited resources either... But as always, time will tell!

Awesome. So unless you did it with jumper cables from a manual transmission vehicle that you push started, you used a battery to start all those vehicles with dead batteries.

Sounds totally sustainable. Just find another person to follow you around everywhere with a manual car so you can push start that one, so you can start your 4Runner. Definitely worth the hassle so you can win an internet argument.

Still think a manual transmission vehicle has no battery, huh?:laugh::laugh::laugh:

There's no argument here, just some random Karen who was triggered by my comment, and fails to acknowledge reality.

So you admit that even a manual transmission is "completely reliant on a battery"?
Thank you, dont know why that was so hard.
Don't know why you spent so much effort defending a obviously false statement. Usually Karens can take a small joke without replying 6 times about how batteries are terrible and that its OK to drive a vehicle unsafely and endanger other road travelers.

I disagree with you there, but to much less of an extent than earlier.

Even if off topic: from what I have been reading, they are limiting the cobalt to the point where it is not to be used and Nevada (only found there) contains enough lithium for all US production for a long time.
A lot of things are not sustainable NOW (among them the continuous oil consumption as well), however, technology moves on, laws are being updated, population perception is changing...
Look at the Rav4 Prime, they all put their feet in the water, slowly.
Nobody said it will be overnight or the 5 years, but it is happening.
I bet in 5 years or less we will see a 4R hybrid.

I sold a 2016 trd pro with 86k miles, I bought it in 2015 and paid $42k for. Autonation gave me $33k for it.

Pre corona in 2019 the kbb value was like $28k for my 2016.

I rolled that all into a new lunar rock, and financed the remaining balance @ 2.19% Ain’t even mad.

the market is absurd for used cars right now.

If you are in a position to come out ahead in your own opinion now is the time to do it. I doubt this kind of market is sustainable for trades and sales of used vehicles.

I could see a 4R hybrid and I'd be onboard with that. I just don't ever think anyone would ever want an all electric off-road vehicle, especially if they're actually going "off-road". Would you rather carry a couple of extra fuel cans for a quick and easy refuel? Or carry a massive solar panel that will take DAYS to recharge the battery? Solar tech is pretty much maxed, so it's not like that's going to get any better either.

The best "bang for the buck" right now for generating power is still nuclear... Now imagine if they were able to safely make nuclear powered vehicles.:laugh: You'd only have to refuel once every ten years or so!

    @NightRunner
you made me google it, LOL
so it is a slow upbeat in efficiency over the years with solar, not as much as i expected
with that being said, the cybertruck says it will have solar panels to add 15 miles per day, which, in my case, means one way to work with zero cost (after initial purchase) (* i do 8 miles one way to work, but you add other consumers while sitting)
    https://electrek.co/2019/11/22/tesla-cybertruck-solar-roof-option-add-range/

i think this discussion will look quite silly in 10 years, the advancements are probably be going way better

For giggles, I checked Autonation to see what they would give me for mine, a '19 SR5P with 26k on it. Their most current offer was $38,400, which is $2k more than I paid for it new. Now they won't leave me alone. Funny thing is, I'm kinda content with the 4Runner at this point and don't really have any inclination to sell or trade it.

The good news is that even when used car prices return to normal, 4Runners will still have strong resale value.

One of the reasons for this insane used car pricing for 4Runners is due to the recent high demand for used cars in general. People are scooping up used cars because they don’t want to commute with others for fear of covid. I’ve seen that public transportation usage is way down in the SF Bay Area for busses, light rail, trains, BART.

That, and the semiconductor chip shortage, and the clogging of ships at ports of entry, shorter work schedules, etc. A perfect storm for used 4Runners, which are always desireable anyway.
