Just bought a 4runner. Please help me with wheels!

    I’m still looking into tires but right now I’m leaning towards Toyo Open Country AT3. Probably going to stick with stock size. Everyone has KOs so I don’t want them lol. Nitto Grappler G2, Cooper Discover AT3s are nice too.

    Unique is a good thing, but if I was concerned about my rig being unique, I'd have to paint it purple or pink.

    If an APB was put out in my area to look out for a white 4Runner, that would probably narrow it down to 500-600 vehicles. ;)

    Sometimes being anonymous is a good thing. :)

    Any suggestions on what tire rating to go with? I see P/SL and E. I know the LTs have the E rating generally but I’m not sure if that’s overkill.

    Depends what your use will be. I run E rated because of the terrain I off-road in and peace of mind. With that said, you may benefit from a c rated tire if you don’t plan on doing any rough terrain off roading. The heavier you go with tires, the worse your mpg gets (although I get 15.8mpg average).

    If you're not going to be off-roading much, I would definitely stick to an SL/P-metric. They will be fine for some off-roading as well, but be lighter and you'll get better fuel economy. Plus, sometimes the P-metric versions have more siping and/or a softer rubber compound, making them better for rain and snow.

    If you're going to be on a lot of rocky trails where a puncture is more likely, an LT might be worth the extra weight.

    I plan to use it as a daily driver, mainly highway and occasional overlanding. Probably no serious rock climbing or crawling but definitely sand, mud, snow, etc.

    C rated tires are hard to find. Cooper Discoverer AT3 makes one buts that all I can find.

    I have E rated NG's. That's just what the dealership uses. I'm glad though, we have a lot of sharp lava rocks off-road. I think they are at 37 psi and the truck rides great. Very comfortable, soft and squishy. ;)

    Much better ride than my old stock 97 Tacoma 4x4.

    You should be fine with SL rated tires. That said, LT tires are fine if you want want the extra toughness and don't mind a slight loss of fuel economy.

    I agree with @Slopemaster that the ride quality is fine with LT tires, at least in my experience. I have oversized, E rated mud tires that weigh ~65# and, aside from the noise, you would never know it.

    My properly inflated LT tires (load rating C) are definitely harsher than my previous properly inflated Passenger rated tires. It is noticeable. Same brand and model, slightly larger size. But it's not like it became the Flintstones car. I would go with P if I wasn't off-roading more than a few times a year.

    True, I notice the difference between BFG KO2 LT285/70R17 Load C (34 ish psi) vs Falken Wildpeaks P285/70R17 (32 ish psi). I use Falken Wildpeaks on my Limited since we don't use it for any offroading. Very soft rubber so very comfy on road.

    I don’t think P has enough ply for what I’m wanting to do. C would be ideal but they are more expensive than E since it’s not a common choice. At least in the Cooper Discoverer AT3 that is.

    C is closer to E than it is to P. If you really think you need LT tires, I wouldn't fear E.

    PHOTO UPDATE

    So 20” tires and wheels are gone. Including the rough country leveling kit. Got the new wheels and tires mounted on today! I’d say I’m pretty happy with it. I ended up going with the Falken Wildpeaks 265/70/17 E load. I was surprised to see the rear height is higher than the front at stock but it will grow on me.
