Just got my '18 TRD ORP XP about 6 weeks ago (25.2k miles when I got it and I have 29k on it now).

The maintenance required message popped up on my display this morning but I can't figure out how to access what specifically it's telling me needs to be done. I looked in the owners manual and most have over looked how to do this.

Can anyone tell me how to identify what specific maintenance she's telling me I need to do?

    Thanks!

It's probably telling you to do the 30K maintenance. Oil change, tire rotation, among other things. There should be a maintenance schedule in your glove box, specifying everything required/recommended.

That’s going to come on every 5k miles for tire rotations/oil changes.

Edit- also, you should have had almost the same type of lettering, lettin you know its "close" to maintenance needed.

I think the easiest way is to Google "Toyota 4Runner Owners Manual" and go to the Toyota site. They have the manuals in .pdf there for easy, quick viewing.

FYI, the car doesn't follow a pre-set schedule for maintenance, but adjusts to how you deliver it. So for example, if you do your first maintenance at 6,000 miles, it will bug you again at 11,000, not 10,000.

The Maintenance Required message is mileage based. Every 5000 miles since the last time it was reset, it goes off. To reset it yourself, for example if you did your own oil change, check your owners manual. For your 2018 page 345.
    https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om-s/OM35B46U/pdf/OM35B46U.pdf

Resetting the message indicating maintenance is required (U.S.A. only)

After the required maintenance is performed according to the maintenance schedule, please reset the message.

To reset the message, follow the procedures described below:

1 Turn the engine switch off with the trip meter A reading shown. (→P. 84)

2 Vehicles without a smart key system:

While pressing the display change button (→P. 83), turn the engine switch to the “ON” position (do not start the engine because reset mode will be canceled).

Vehicles with a smart key system:

While pressing the display change button (→P. 83), turn the engine switch to the IGNITION ON mode (do not start the engine because otherwise the reset mode will be canceled).

3 Continue to press and hold the button until the trip meter displays “000000”.

    Good information on resetting.

Now that I've received my two free oil changes and stripped skid plate bolts holes at no extra charge I will be doing my own oil changes from here on out.

At my age I was really hoping that I could just take it to the dealer for oil changes but it's been under new ownership for about two years and I have seen a decline in workmanship.

I've seen those valves and I'm sure they are a good product but I'm not so keen on relying on a spring loaded oil ring poppet seal.

I have seen enough of those types of valves develop leaks on airplanes. They are commonly used as fuel tank sumps and moisture drains for static air systems.

I really like the aluminum filter housing option but it seems that several people have posted issues with them leaking.

Our oil change intervals are so that I'm ok with the OEM drain plug. I saved all the used drain plug gaskets on my Tacoma and Civic so when it came time to sell them, I could show the buyer.

the maintenance lamp comes on around 5K miles. now I change my oil 7500-10K miles. I use a sn plus 0-20wt synthetic oil .. toyota has the best oil to keep your engine quiet has good additives in it to protect the engine components.
grease your drive shafts ,check your diff oils , rotate tires 7-10K miles. check your brakes when you rotate the tires...drop the spare tire and inspect it and add air in it. check the frame rust under the truck .. use a rust proof paint .check for leaks .

I hear what you’re saying about the threaded valve stem standing high and not draining all the oil from the pan. I use a Valvomax and wondered about that too. Then I saw the manufacturer website FAQ that says: “the valve is designed to sit flush with the inside of the pan, thereby releasing all the oil”. I presume Fumoto paid attention to that also.

But regardless, here’s something to consider. In the Toyota 4Runner Repair manual it lists the oil capacities. The Dry Fill is 7.5 US Qts.
So that implies in a normal oil service when you drain it you only get out 6.6 Qts, leaving 0.9 quarts clinging to the innards of the engine!

I do the oil changes .. the runner takes 45 min to drain all the oil out and I add 6.25 qts...
now I had a person telling me crank the engine for one sec just do a quick crank when the oil is drain out .. then a small amount of oil will be drained.
well I do not do this quick crank , because when the oil is drained with my oil change some oil is in the engine and the engine starts up quickly so that is protected ...
my oil change is 7500 miles and the oil looks like new .. hard to read the stick ..
if the oil has antifreeze/dirty in it then do the quick crank ...

I just used the Fumoto valve for the first time. It's super nice not getting oil all over my hand!

There’s a lot of surface area inside the engine, and oil clings as a thin film for some measure of protection at cold starts.
On the Bob is the Oil Guy forum it was stated that depending on the engine size that 0.5 to 1.5 Qts can remain in the engine.
    https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/how-much-oil-is-left-in-engine-after-draining-it.89048/

Oil thins out as it gets hot so the recommendation is to drain it after you warm it up. It will drain faster.
What I do is remove all the covers and skid plates for easy access when everything is cool and run some errands to warm it up. Then drain the hot oil and let it drip for a long time while I do other chores around the garage.
A drain valve like the Fumoto helps so you don’t get hot oil on your hands.

I do the same basic thing. Drive around a bit, then let the oil drain while I rotate the tires. It's a good system. :)
