Think the 2022 MY will have any extra bells and whistles?

Specifically I refer to things that the Canadian market models have that their American counterparts do not.

I know that with the Tundra, the features on the American models usually trailed by a couple years.

For example: On the TRD Pro, do you think they will add the turn signals in the mirrors? (Canadian models have them). And on the Venture / TRD ORP, Dual Zone Climate and automatic on/off headlights.

 

Nobody has any thoughts? (shameless bump)

 

It's a good question, but I don't know the answer.

I haven't paid enough attention Canadian models, so I'm not really familiar with the bells and whistles they come with and if those bells and whistles make it into US models eventually.

Hopefully someone can chime in.

I will say that the 2022 4Runner will likely be the last year of the 5th gen. Everything seems to be pointing to a 6th gen for 2023 model year.

 

I agree I think the 2022 is last of 5th Gen from all that I read and can an ascertain from dealers. I am glad I am getting mine now, happy to buy the gas and have something that has a good reputation. Hopefully they maintain at least the same towing capacity of 5,000lb or increase it.

 

I'll bet a couple small things filter down to lower models. Dual climate control, LED high and low beams, etc. Just little plug and play items that would incentivize someone to buy the 2022 over a 2021.

I'm with everyone else that 2023 will bring the 6th gen model with significant changes, for better or worse.

 

That's exactly what I'm thinking as well. And I agree, 2022 will be the last of this generation.

 

6th gen will be introduced as 2024/5 model, production is not due to start 2024 Q1 and it'll be build in Mexico, 4th gen Tacoma will be introduced as 2024 with production starting on 2023 Q3.

 

Wow, Hard Pass from me then! I will definitely be shopping for a 5th Gen then!

that last part is obliviously about the new Tundra, Tacoma will be mostly built in Mexico, so will the 4runner, while the San Antonio plant will build Tundra/Seqouia.

 

Can't access the site, but even what you posted says nothing about the 4runner being built in Mexico.

 

I think they will announce it by Q4 this year on the expansion of factory, most sub suppliers have gotten notifications that it's going to be built in Mexico, a lot of these are planned years ahead.

 

Well, if that's true I guess I'll be grabbing one of the last 5th gens then!

I hope it does not go to Mexico. There goes a reason I think a lot of people buy this unit is because of the quality coming out of that plant in Japan.

You can always change the location to build something but you cannot change the work ethic of people in one region versus another.

A lot of manufacturers went south and there build quality is not what it should be.

It’s ashame if that happens gosh.

 

For me, it’s more than just where it’s being made and who’s making it. It’s what the industry is trending towards. And that is smaller engines that are turbocharged(more fuel efficient) and CVT transmissions(which for the most part are total garbage.) It’s certainly possible that they will put a nice 8 speed in there though. However, I’m not about to wait and see. The next gen will most likely appeal to the people who won’t buy one because it’s “outdated,” while likely pissing off a lot of the 4Runner faithful with its updates. And you know what, if all of that is wrong and it’s awesome, the 2021 will still hold their value and you could just upgrade. Just my two cents. YMMV as always

The head Toyota engineer I forgot name after the video on the Tahara plant said people buy these for QRD. Quality, reliability and durability. I think the the people of that plant take this seriously.

If the QRD goes down the tubes going to Mexico well there go a lot of loyal customers. It’s all about money though I get it. Just hate the reputation to go down the tubes. To me it’s not with the risk

 

I wouldn't hesitate (much) if they started building the 4Runner in Mexico.

Remember, it's still Toyota setting up the plant and running the operation when it comes down to it.

Has the Tacoma built in Mexico shown any less reliability than the one built in the US?

 

I still can’t wrap my head around why some features in Canada are standard but the equivalent in the states it’s not. You’d think from a manufacturing cost standpoint it’d be cheaper to keep it all the same. Maybe I’m just jealous my ORP doesn’t have dual climate (great for a wife who’s hot when I’m cold and cold when I’m hot) and auto headlights.
I too am curious what the next generation of Toyota’s will bring. I’ve been patiently waiting to see what they’ve done with the Tundra. I thought for sure we would have seen it by now. I just hope Toyota doesn’t abandon the classic styling we all love in the truck lineup.

 

There's one single way for Toyota to make me not buy one of their vehicles, and that is for it to be made in Mexico. I think I'd rather buy a non-Mexico made Jeep than a Mexico-made Toyota.

Well you could get a little Bronco made in Michigan Gamma. Although I am not up for spending that cash on a new vehicle and new engine that only tows 3,500lbs.

 

My made in Mexico 2013 Tacoma has been flawless since day one. 112k miles and counting. Wheel it and use it as commuter with no issues.

The Baja factory has won numerous President awards for quality from Toyota BTW.

 

Just goes to show you Toyota manufacturer quality extends beyond Japan.

I’m guessing a lot of people will be keeping their heads in the sand regarding these quality awards if it ever came to a 4runner made in Mexico.

 

I think the biggest question will be not where its manufactured, buy how much it will change. The green mandates are going to be pushed in the coming years. Offroad capability is not even considered in their thought process. If Toyota can still sell a 100k units under the 4Runner badge, they wont care about the offroad ability.

I can’t speak to long term reliability as I only had my Baja made Tacoma for two years before I traded it for my 2021 4Runner, but I can say that the build quality is flawless as far as I can tell on my 4Runner. The Tacoma’s hood and tailgate weren’t perfectly centered. They worked fine and I decided to just live with it. It was the 3.5L constantly hunting for gears that drove me to the 4Runner and it’s excellent 4.0L. I had a 2006 Tacoma with that motor and it was outstanding IMO. I just wish the Oil filter was on top of the engine and a spin on like my 06 Tacoma! Simple and quick oil changes.

 

Unless they make a hybrid 4R, I won't ever buy a different one. Getting 11.5 for 600 miles going to Utah last week was nauseating and will be even worse once gas prices hit $4/gallon nationwide. The only thing my Pro is missing is the LED headlights. I want no other things on my 4R.

 

That’s why I ordered mine now. I am happy to pay for the gas if it’s reliable as everyone says. You’re right that gas is going the wrong direction though but I think most of knew it would.

 

That's just it, fuel costs will have most people priced right out of anything but a hybrid 4Runner. That is the plan going forward imho. Racing, private aviation, utvs, and boating will all be too expensive for a large portion of the population.

 

Agree with you on the build quality, I picked up my 21' ORP yesterday and I'm impressed. Everything just has such a nice feel to it compared to many new vehicles I have bought in the past. I still have my 12' tacoma and I was impressed by that truck but the t4r blows it away.

I'm also with you, why the heck did they decide to move the oil filter? I love how easy my tacoma is to change the oil and no skid plate removal.
