Guarantee it's only a matter of time before they drop the same engine they put in the Tacomas. That;s why I bought the last 2019 I could find because I was worried about that.

Aren’t those 3.5Ls having a lot of problem? I’ve got a 2010 Tacoma with the 2.7L and almost 127K on the clock; Easily put 2,000 miles a month on it nowadays and have never had a problem!

Correct. I think it's a Camry engine? My 05 Tacoma has the 4.0 same as the current 4runner. It's not the best on gas but it's a great engine. My 88 PU had the die hard 22RE and it was awesome.

I have a taco with the 3.5. It’s a slug but the rest of the truck is great. The power in the 3.5 is all in the upper rpms, which is kinda dumb for a truck

The only 3rd Gen I’ve ever driven was my uncle’s 2017 AC TRD Sport 2WD, with the 3.5L and automatic; I thought it had plenty of power, but coming from my 2.7L slushbox, anything will seem like it has more power!

It’s on the hiway where you really notice the lack of power. Constantly shifting to maintain speeds on the interstate. Just a slight headwind and it’ll downshift. Back and forth, back and forth. And if you have a headwind, you’ll get like 13mpg if you try to maintain 75mph.

I get better all around mpg in my T4R than I did in my 3rd gen 3.5L Tacoma. Couldn’t believe how much it sucked compared to the 2nd gen 4.0. Around town, if you used the gear limiter it was a fun truck though.

Huge let-down after driving Tacoma’s for 25 years. It’s what pushed me over to the T4R.

That was my biggest shock too, seeing how this 4.0 got better MPG’s than the 3.5 in the Tacoma.

I guess if you spent all your time driving around town at 35-40mph with an empty bed you’d prob do better in the Tacoma. But real world mpg sucked in my experience.

I had the 2018 Manual Transmission Trd Pro Tacoma and it would get great mpg go off road fantastic however it just did not have the balls needed for highway passing others and when it came to towing the boat? forget it because I live in mountain area and many of the fishing were up long rather steep grades using 3rd gear the entire way up really got to me when speed limit was 65 mph and your the only one doing 25 mph outside of that I really did like that truck.IMG_1379.jpg

Yeah it’s just amazing to me that you’d have to run a modern truck like that up hills. It’s like driving a Honda Civic now. Blows my mind that they’re an almost $40k truck.

I have a 2017 DC sport manual transmission, had a 09 access cab 4 cylinder manual before.

The engines are not having problems, it’s just not what the Tacoma drivers are used to. And the auto transmission sounds like it sucks.

    It’s a Lexus motor I believe.

It’s a good engine. It’s just that the throttle mapping is freaking horrible. And they likely can’t fix it without affecting their mpg numbers.

Next 4runner will probably look more like the Fortuner, and come with a hybrid. If you look at all of Toyota's other USA models, this is the only logical conclusion.

That's not a bad thing. I was watching some Ronny Dahl reviews of the Fortuner, it seems like a pretty solid rig. Too bad we won't get the same engine choices they get in AUS.

    Current Fortuner is BOF.

Honestly, I could care less if they move away with BOF. Modern unibodies are stiffer/safer. Also, before someone mentions towing, the 4R's tow rating is not impressive, there are unibodies rated to tow the same, and the unibody Grand Cherokee can tow 2k lbs MORE. Also, since we're talking Toyota, a unibody means no frame to eventually rot out. Unibodies seem to be better designed to resist that. There are also unibody SUV's that are as capable or MORE capable than the 4R offroad, so that' not really a thing either.

Just my .02, I know most people here would disagree.
