I want as much clearance as I can get and I want a tall rig. I love those high lifted runners. I’ve been thinking with a body lift it might be possible to fit the 295’s without a BMC so I want to install it first before any surgery. Won’t know until I try.

Thanks. Wheels are 17x8 FX Pro wheels. Liked the Pro wheels but needed wider so these were the best option.

You’re over thinking this. Tall is not good, higher center of gravity is never anyone’s goal. 2.5” front 2” rear running 295s with no BMC

I’m running a cornfed 2.25” lift now on the pro suspension. I’m still trying to decide which direction I want to go with replacing the pro suspension.

So I had no fun tonight. I removed my M.O.R.E. Skid plates so I can bring my 4Runner in to get re-geared and lockers next week. Well what should have been a quick job to get everything done turned into an all out nightmare of a problem.

The nuts for the 4 screws in the transmission crossmember that held on the skid plate did not have a good weld from Toyota. So instead of this process being a quick an easy event it took over 2 hours to complete.

    This is the transmission crossmember:
    B783686B-5993-4A44-912D-BB82280956B8.jpg

Here is the 3 nuts that lost their weld. The screw with a spacer in the image above is the only nut that held its weld.
    C3D7873E-B44D-40E5-97E7-1727748FA5D3.jpg

There were tiny holes at the top of the bracket that allowed me to get a 13mm wrench in them. I hope no one else has to go through this. Now I have to get them back on.

Just received my 100K warranty agreement. Here's a list of exclusions. Your dealer may or may not adhere to.

Start 7 lines up from the bottom and to the right - where it reads nuts bolts clips retainers and fasteners. Followed by - structural framework and welds.

I wonder if J.B. Weld would work well for this stuff? I could put that on the nuts. Anyone know if that would be strong enough?

If you were able to get a wrench on them? I think you said you were? And, if they're in good enough condition? Reuse them and or replace them with a lock nut or add a lock washer and you should be good to go.

Yeah it was not easy by any means. I can’t imagine getting them back on. The only way I can think of fixing this is taking the bar off and getting the nuts welded back on or trying JB weld.

Don't like saying this but JB Weld will disappoint you at best. It will not take torquing pressure. Unless you intend to be taking the plates on and off with frequency.....take the time, grit your teeth and add lock nuts.

One more suggestion - because Toyota's robot welders seem to do a pretty bad job spot welding. If, in the future you know you're going to be removing stuff under there, take the time to spray each and every nut and bolt you plan on removing with either WD 40 - or - rig up a soft plastic bottle with a plastic extension like WD 40 has and fill it with Marvs Miracle Oil - then soak the nuts and or bolts - a couple of times - well in advance of your planned removal. Just a tip. Do with it as you please.

I found another article here with someone having this same exact issue: I see they talked about nutserts. I have never used a nutsert before (from my immediate memory). I have done a little research. Do you think nutserts would be strong enough to hold up to the this task? I was thinking of getting carbon steel and painting it all after it is done.

anyone with experience using nutserts on vehicles for something like the transmission crossmember supports and the Aluminum skid plates? I want to make sure they are strong enough before going down this route.

I appreciate you all and hope my post will have the opportunity to help someone else if they find themselves in this unfortunate situation.

Nurserts could work; but you’d need to get ones slightly larger then the existing holes; meaning you’d have to drill each hole out. Then you’d have to be absolutely sure you get them set properly, else they will spin when you go to take off the skid layer on (which will be an even bigger pita as there’s no putting a wrench on the other side of a nutsert). A couple of things you could do to help: 1, make sure to use antisieze on the bolts, and 2, if you have a welder, you can add a tack weld to each nutsert to help keep it from spinning on you in the future.

Perhaps a better solution though, would be to just use some serrated flange nuts. Use a screwdriver to help line them up as you drop them in from the top holes; then you just need to get a finger or something on them or something to hold it as you get the bolt started. Once the serrations bite, you can torque them down with no wrench needed. To remove them later, just zip off the bolt with an impact.

Thank you for all the replies. I had a Westcott Design install my skid plates and they did not appear to use anti seize on the bolts and I didn’t think I would need to spray lubricant on the bolts since they were installed not long ago (I don’t even know how I would have got any lube in there with how tight it was).

I am down to the following options in order of possibility:
1: Use nutserts and weld them (good idea in the weld)
2: Drill all the way through the crossmember and put a nut up top
3: Remove the crossmember and try to re-weld the nuts inside the cross member.

I am Looking for the fastest but best solution. I never want to have to stick a wrench up there again through those tiny holes.
