I do my work on my all vehicles . now in nov I do the oil changes/rotate tires/drop the spare tire/inspect for all rust on the frame...
when I do the tire rotations I inspect all the brake pads .. when new ,, I put anti seize high temp on the brake pad backing plate. now over the 50yrs I did this on my GM vehicles but I changed to toyota in 2016.
I never had any brake noise .. pads wear out evenly . and I never had to cut my rotors ...all my brake pads wear the same all front rear..
when I replace my rotors for about 8-10yrs they have rust blisters not much wear.
when I install new rotors I use 220 grit sand paper to sand on the braking surface in a rotation .. wipe the surface with mineral spirits and I paint the rotor to protect the alum rims.
the other work I did was to use silicone brake grease to protect the rubber seals on the calipers.. I never use brake cleaner .. it destroys the paint/rubber..
did they bleed your brake fluid ? I had to bleed my brake system new .. had air in it ..

The service report didn't say anything about bleeding the brakes, so I can't say for sure, but I would have done that. The report said they sanded the rotors, not machined, so possibly they did as your suggest. I do all my own work on the vehicles I own as well. Had to change both front wheel bearings on the Grand Cherokee last year.

I'm a aircraft mechanic, so I would have fixed this, but no way was I going to after just paying for a brand new vehicle. :)

One day I'll have my 86 Landcruiser back on the road (blown head gasket, rust, etc) and my wife will get the 4Runner to replace the Jeep. Never had any issues with the cruiser, and my dad bought it brand new. Was the reason I went with the 4Runner as the 2021 Landcruiser isn't sold in Canada.
    Cheers!

your 86 landcruiser did have a lot of rust .. I only use distilled water no tap water.. 35% distilled 65% antifreeze..
well ,,, Toyota has a 50-50 antifreeze product... the manual states put in distilled water not tap water ...
my GM vehicles has dexcool .. and I can buy 100% antifreeze and when I change my 1996-2000 vehicles every 4 yrs looks like new .. I had to replace my 1996 radiator 3yrs ago , because the plastic GM tank had a crack.. replaced it and the old radiator looked like new internal ..
dealership did sand it .... when you put new pads in it sand the rotor brake surface ...pads when new can cause a new surface on the pads and make a noise.. when new pads installed brake the pedal easy ...

Update: Called the dealer to set up an inspection of the brakes as at 1,1xx miles the issue is still occurring. Spoke with the service manager who said that it is a fairly common issue they are seeing right now with brake dust. It has to do with the specific type of brand new metallic brake pads that come from the factory and after sitting over night/longer period of time, when you back out of the driveway or come to a slow stop those first few times braking when first driving the vehicle you're barely brushing the pad with the rotor and that is how the squeak occurs. He said as long as the squeak is only on the first couple of times breaking, that is what the issue is and not a brake piston and/or misalignment issue. As the pads wear the issue should reduce and at the first scheduled service (5k miles) they check the brake alignment anyway. So I am now going to floor it down my street in the morning so that my first time I brake will be slamming them down (half kidding).

1100 miles on your runner so they said it is brake dust .. that is a lie.
the brake pads make noise when they are sticking in the caliper bracket.. then the pads will get glazed and create a squeal ...

I know many on here do no work on the runners .. now if you can inspect it ... remove the brake pads and see if the pad surface is a glazed look .. pads stick in the caliper that cause it .. pads should come out easy .. if the are not easy to remove the pads most likely have a pad backing plate burr on the edges of the metal plate..
another issue bleed the brake fluid system .. probably has air in it ..

Confirming the dealer knows about the issue which means Toyota knows about the issue....

Wouldn't glazed pads and/or air in the brake lines be an issue that would persist more than the first 2-3 times braking in the morning? It operates normally after.

    @Sjewell94

I still haven't had an issue since they fixed my problem. I felt exactly like you, feeling like I have to slam on the brakes so it wouldn't make noise. Ask Toyota to properly inspect the brakes, and replace the SHIM's and PAD's. I included the part numbers from when I had the service done. I'm so glad I took the video and showed them what my issue was, because now I don't have to worry about the brakes squealing every morning.

We have to remember this is a brand new truck, with literally 1000 miles on it.

What dealer did you take yours to? I have 21 Nightshade, having the same issue. Service department said this is normal. I said are you kidding me. First Toyota I’ve owned to do this.

    I’m in northern Virginia area.

Toyota keeps changing the recipe on their brake pads.

They used to have some at worked really well but dusted heavily.

Now they have some that don’t dust very much, don’t work very well, and squeal.

There used to be two separate model numbers for the cheap brake pads and the good brake pads, I’m not sure if they still make them.

my 2016 4 runner OEM brake pads no noises .. I inspect all my brakes every year when I rotate my tires.
on my vehicles that I own over 20 yrs I put anti seize on the brake pad backing steel plate and also the backing plate has a burr creates a manufacturer that stamps the plate ,,, creates binding and I file off the burrs on the new pads.
your dealership is stupid or a lie .

Hi j cat. I have two acquaintances with 4 Runners, 2019 and another with a new 2021 and they have no issues either. I have a feeling its like 1 in 5,000 or 10,000 vehicles world wide that experience this issue. I personally believe its the brake manufacture that may have metal in the pads on very few vehicles. New pads, problem gone.

Not sure if anyone is still reading this thread, but I had the same issue and it's the front pads. There is a Toyota TSB for this issue and is covered under warranty. Just tell the dealer it is "T-SB-0085-21".

My 21 was pre virus. It sqeaked for a while. I’ve since run it through mud, sand, water, dust, and dirt. Original brakes have been quiet now going on at least 35k miles :)

appreciate you bumping this up, I've noticed my brake pads do the same squealing the first few stabs of the brakes. I'll have my dealer check it out during my next service which is coming up soon.

If your rotors are still good throw away the OE pads and install Akebono Ultra-Premium ceramics and lube correctly, if rotors are done change those too. You can thank me later.

If you drive a lot, it will eventually go away. I dont think mine anymore brake squeal noise after 10k miles or there-abouts.

When you take it to the dealer, somebody will scratch your paint, ding your door, and replace a U-joint for no reason, and tell you the brake noise is normal.
