    There's too many issues with the longevity of head gaskets on non-diesel turbo motors. You either run that risk, or run so low of boost it's silly to have a turbo. 4Runners are known for reliability and longevity. My 4Runner gets the same, or worse, mileage than my Tundra 5.7, and Sequoia 5.7 - just put a 5.7 in the 4Runner, add an 8 gear tranny, the GX460 A/C system, an available locking rear diff on all models and call it a day. I'd even settle for the 4.6 V8 in the GX. Quit listening to the magazine "testers" who want Bentley comforts in a 4Runner. If you want that, get a Highlander Limited.

    As much as I would enjoy the GX V8 in my 4runner, we're never going to see a V8 in a 4runner again. It has nothing to do with comfort, either.

    I can't say whether I prefer the turbo option or the hybrid option better, but that's what the next 4Runner is getting. At least, I really hope we're not getting that fake Atkinson cycle Camry motor from the Tacoma.

    One can hope for a V8, as unlikely as it may be. I have read review after review of the 4Runner that refer to this rig as old technology, antiquated suspension, unappealing cab and lack of creature comforts. My point is they don't understand what the 4Runner is because they drive Prius' to work.

    Yeah, I don't really care for the technology part, I could take it or leave it. It's the fuel economy when the vehicle will also be my daily driver and I'm 20miles one way to work. No one knows yet what the 6th gen will hold, all we can do is guess at what Toyota will do. As long as it's still made in Japan, I'll buy it. I don't want any of these Gen Z people making my car, they'll probably lick every part of it to get toktokagramspacebook likes.

    I just got off a conference call w kamala, xi, and Toyota corporate. Press release will be next week about a joint venture w the ccp and Japan. Its going to be called the "Rav 4Runner" - made in china, unibody, 3.5 hybrid 100 mpg, CVT, 22" low profile, self driving, latte machine, 7g internet, tiktok selfie camera, w clear coated primer and a 15 color wrap option done at the dealer . There, now all the speculation can be put to bed.

    For me, and I'm sure a lot of 4Runner drivers, the appeal is an old tough body on frame SUV with real off-road capability and toughness, but still nice enough to drive everyday.

    I don't care about Apple car play and dual zone climate control, but the majority of the market does. If Jeep and Bronco offer these fancy things, the 4runner has to as well.

    Reliability aside, I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want better mileage.

    I was with you up to that last sentence! I consider lower mpg as the cost of doing business for the capability and reliability. I don't really care for turbos. And I'm not sold yet on Hybrids/EV for the driving I do and
    the conditions I drive through here in Colorado. I'm happy with 18'ish mpg in my truck. It's about what I expected. 25 - 30 mpg would be good, but not at the expense of the capability and reliability. I drive around 1000 miles a month, and the gas savings I would have at 30mpg vs 18 would be around the same as a nice dinner once a month.

    Like I said, reliability aside. I wouldn't want a problematic vehicle. I'm just saying, if everything else was equal, I would love a few more MPG.

    I'm not dissatisfied. I just wouldn't mind more.

    I drive about double that. And, a lot of times I'll drive 500+ miles on a weekend. With prices always fluctuating, I'll take more money in my pocket if its an option.

    The next-gen Tundra comes out later this year and the "leaked" image of it's partial front-end looks very 4Runner-esque. I'm hoping this image is real and the two vehicles will share design (maybe even powertrain) traits. With any luck we'll have an idea of the next 4Runner upon seeing the next Tundra.

    6th gen 2023 models will arrive around August 2022.

    Only a few Toyota vehicles are not offered in hybrid yet.
    • Land Cruiser
    • Sequoia
    • 4Runner
    • Tundra
    • Tacoma
    With CA ban on all new gas powered vehicles by 2035, auto manufacturers have shifted into overdrive to get on the EV train. Thus, the 6th gen might be the last 4Runner offered with an engine, in the US. Crazy.

    Naw, they wouldn’t bother to make it electric, probably just cancel it. Electric conversions are, for the most part, shitty. Better to design all new for electric.

    How do those two compare?

    Additionally, Toyota New Global Archiecture (TNGA) is happening across all their vehicles. You should check it out.

    The TNGA platform was developed alongside the Dynamic Force engine, which similarly is replacing more than 800 engine variants with a much simpler lineup of 17 versions of nine engines.[3] Toyota is also simplifying its lineup of transmissions, hybrid systems, and all-wheel drive systems.

    There are six different TNGA platforms, including an a new one for Trucks/SUVs, and the new 4Runner and Sequoia will utilize the new TNGA-F truck platform first seen on the new Tundra.

    CA did not BAN gas powered motors by 2035. They set a GOAL to be all electric by 2035.

    In California, 'goal' is fancy talk for two things.
    1. They will implement some kind of new gas-powered tax on consumer, forcing the poorer to go EV. :(
    2. They will implement some kind of new tax on auto manufacturers for importing gas powered vehicles, which will be passed onto the consumer via higher vehicle cost. :(

    Either way, they will do their best to force consumers to buy EV. And the intended results have already been achieved. Auto manufacturers are finally making a huge push to go all EV. GM even rebranded themselves with an EV-centric logo which is insane move from a marketing standpoint, and which apparently they only intended to do the rebrand if we got a new president. Forced hand I suppose. The EV blitz is on.

    Will be interesting to see what Toyota does with the 4Runner and Land Cruiser.

    IMO, from a “living in the USA” standpoint, the FJ-80 was the last true, utilitarian TL/C.
    They went soft after that.
    And they can do whatever they want because they lost me a long time ago.

    I'm not comparing them, just pointing out a powerful hybrid might be cool in a 4Runner. The F150 hybrid I'd consider powerful, the Highlander hybrid not so much (although adequate for road only use).

    There is nothing stopping California from getting rid of the gas power vehicle ban in 2035, its not set in stone. Whether we like it or not, gas powered vehicles are on their way out, its not sustainable even if climate change wasn't a thing. Hybrids are coming, and your never going to get a manual transmission or a v8 after that. The pressure on Toyota to increase efficiency is too extreme.

    The way engine design works is you get to choose 2 of the following: efficiency, power, or reliability. Unpopular opinion, I'm fine with them increasing efficiency, I'm going to be on this Earth another 50-60 years and I need it to stay habitable at least long enough to let me live my life somewhat normally.

    I'm most interested in how the 2023 4Runner effects the resale values of 5th gen models. My guess? Resale for 5th gens holds steady at minimum and increases at best. Toyota would have to build a grand slam, everybody is happy, total unicorn of a 6th Gen model for 5th gen demand/love to drop, and I just don't see that happening.

    Unless the new 6th gen is really bad, I don't see 5th gen prices increasing any time soon. The 5th gens were sold for a long time, according to the sales numbers in the 10 years that there is information for, they sold a total of 1,025,718 4runners. Not all were TRD or even 4wd models, but its not exactly a recipe for appreciation immediately after discontinuation like some FJ Cruisers. Toyota would really have to screw up the 6th gen for 5th gens to appreciate soon after discontinuation.

    I predict that 5th gen prices decrease according to their specs. TRD pro will decrease a little in price after the 6th gen, while the 2wd will drop in price even more. It will be like the Jeep XJ where clean examples start appreciating value someday, but if you think that a chopped up 2014 4wd SR5 is not going to depreciate at all, you have another thing coming. I pay more for vehicles that have their original bumpers and fenders, its how it goes. That said, 5th gens will hold value well compared to other vehicles because Toyota + 4wd. This estimate is assuming this sudden spike 4wd vehicles remains, if it doesn't the desirability and price of 5th gens will suffer.

    Also out of curiosity I totaled the number of 3rd gens sold and its an impressive 749871 in just 6 years. That is an average of 124978 3rd gens sold each year. The 5th gens sell an average of 102571 per year.
