Yes and no. It has the predecessor to the MAF know as the AFM (air flow meter). They both do the same thing but AFMs are very different. 2nd gen AFMs are big metal bricks located on top of the air filter box. In order to clean it your going to need to remove the lid of the box and pull off all the little 10mm bolts holding it to the plastic lid. To clean it you just need a rag and some break clean. Just be careful, because if you use too much force on the little door it'll snap the spring. Be gentle while cleaning. I'll see if I can find some old pics of it so you have a reference

So I personally wouldn't recommend using brake clean to clean you MAF or AFM, it's a pretty harsh chemical to use on something so sensitive. CRC, the company that makes brake clean, also makes a MAF cleaner fluid that does wonders, (gave me a few extra mpg!) and you don't need any rags or anything. It's only 7 bucks for a pack of the cleaner that comes with a throttle body cleaner. I found it at walmart, it looks like this9542b531fca66fd66dab217407a4ebbe_f1a1593514173a78d5347ac24490942a82d8678d.jpg

Normally I'd agree. Break clean is too harsh for MAFs because of the way they're designed. AFMs however are fragile in a completely different way. They use a metal flap that gets pushed open and closed to determine wind flow. Only thing that you have to be concerned with is the spring. That's why you need a rag to properly clean it. You pretty much rap your finger in the rag, spray the rag, and start rubbing the inside of the AFM. If you don't do it this way you may not be able to clean behind the flap as effectively. Perosnally I don't think there's anything wrong with using brake clean on an AFM (would never do it on a MAF) but that's because that's how I was taught by my mechanic.

Gotcha! I didn't know that, actually. It makes sense that the AFM would be different lol. Good looking out! :) :)

Yeah it's kinda interesting. They went from this big metal flap that blocks the passageway to this tiny little needle that barely occupies any space. AFM are much more durable however. I've never even heard of one being broken other than the spring breaking because someone was too rough while cleaning.

Those 2nd Gens are awesome. I loved mine, but bought it from someone who didn't love it as much as I did, causing an early end. :'( they're like tanks, but you gotta maintain em'!

Yeah definitely. I know where you're coming from. Mine was horribly handled before I got it. Even came to discover one day that the thing had no air filter! This was back during my high school auto shop days so I went to go check my intake with my teacher. It was solid black and he said it is probably the worst I'll ever see. It no doubt played a part in my pour gas mileage and eventual head gasket failure.

Yep. Mine was terribly handled as well. Bought it at 227, and the previous owner had a gasket leak that caused a me to blow a rod bearing. I was not pleased when I found out my SR5 wasn't worth much more than scrap. But damn, she was CLEAN 1ecf4cc5f28fdf9618ddd59877474a6f_6f3a56d2d075f0b10e72b47961ec08d589345eb7.jpgad1634b68c4374bc201d067791431f54_57df40620e9f4edeb565e6fea8134941fa29c848.jpgef1c74e002aac599ee608d7c78d44094_4b1cb8c0243b05ab4630942a68ba9aae169a4a99.jpg

 damn that thing is clean. I was gonna guess 3.0 since it wasn't worth much but I don't see a V6 badge. Was it a 22RE??

You know, I honestly don't remember, but I want to say yes. I had it about 2 years ago (I got a 3rd Gen 4wd and fell in love, she's pretty clean too, I just posted in the 3rd Gen photo thread if you wanna see her lol)

But yeah, it was a 3-point-slow. It was weak on the highway and over bridges and I was planning on doing an engine swap but it was just too much to spend on that car. After an engine swap on a car that old, you'll need a tranny too.

Depends actually. I can swap my 3.0 for the 3rd gen 3.4 and probably be fine because they use the same manual transmission. Its only a 36 hp increase and my tranny is in good condition as far as I can tell so it should be able to handle it. The automatics are a little trickier though

Here's the promised pictures of the AFM I promised.

    afm 3.jpg

It has a total of 5 bolts holding it to the top of the air cleaner. These 2 in plain sight on the top.
    afm 2.jpg

Then you have these 2 bolts under here. You will need to bend these metal tabs out of the way so you can get at them. One potential way to test if someone's taken it out before you or not. Lastly there is one that is in the back on the bottom
    afm 1.jpg

    Hope this helps!

Much more durable than a MAF. By the way, found you, Kyle!

Ha ha that pic is actually from the previous owner. One of the many pics he sent me of it. Both are still sitting there dead as hell. :anonymous:
