Rear Axle Seal, Dealer Estimate??

Just got a 2002 SR5 & took it to my favorite Toyota dealer. Got word that the inner rear axle seal is leaking & needs replaced. Total was $850 that includes the brake shoe kit.
New to 4Runners, but is this too high or the norm?

Sitting at the dealer now, awaiting my response.

Update, I declined to have the work done today and left the dealer. Pretty sure I can have the rear axle seal done cheaper than that.
However, on the way home it threw a P770 code. This is a “Shift Solenoid” verified at a local
Auto parts store. Will call Toyota dealer in the morning & see if one of the techs might have
a clue why. The vehicle shifts/runs fine & turned off O/D at 55mph and the RPM’s jumped up
like they should. Hopefully this turns out to be a minor issue...

 

Welcome and yeah that is high but dealers are almost always high for any work. Is it leaking bad or just a seep. My local dealer wanted $1200 to fix a supposed leak on my Corolla but it is just a seep so no deal. Did you try resetting the code and see if it throws it again?

 

Resetting the code today and will see what happens. Ironically the TSB for that year says it will throw a code after a long incline, which is exactly what happened. Hopefully, it was just that, cause I’m a little out of warranty. Dealership also said my oversized wheels/tires may have contributed. Dealer also said to keep O/D off and see how it goes.

 

Reset the code & ran it for about 25 miles. No problems for now, no codes resurfaced. Kept the O/D off and found a big hill.
Best part of my trip today was a stop at a local mechanic. He said he could do the rear axle seal for $250! That would be a $600 savings compared to the Toyota dealer. I like that...
Taking the 4Runner in Monday to drop it at a local high school Vo-Tech Auto Body Repair Class. Going to have some frame rust scraped and treated.

 

Just be sure he knows what he's doing. I'd (grudgingly) rather go w/$850 once instead of doing it twice when someone else fucks it up & the stealership has to fix what they fucked up. Keep in mind that when they replace the brakes they have to do them in pairs, so that should take some of the sting out of $850.
