1997 4runner 3.4L wiring

Just found this, looking for a diagram. Or help of some sort.
The white plug was disconnected when I bought the vehicle, I was trying to diagnose a "engine running lean code" but stumbled upon this. (Rear window doesn't work)

 

You need to get yourself a Service Manual. Maybe like this:

I scrounged for mine on-line that someone uploaded and got the 2002 specific one. It has excellent schematics with wire colors/etc. It makes sorting things out like what you have, much easier.

Skip Haynes or Chiltons. Those help very little. You need the TOYOTA Service Manual.

Looks like maybe someone tried to wire in a kill switch to the fuel pump? Maybe goes through the rear hatch? Lol. Who knows.

 

I'm guessing a wire or two was laid front to back on this car. Those red and blue and white wires don't look OEM to me for some reason and I see they run under the sill, both ways. So they're hooked up somewhere else.

This is where I rip apart the interior and the neighbors bring their kids indoors due to the swearing.

Does this rig have any aftermarket alarms or speakers or sound system that you know of?

Isn't it a Blue and Orange wire in most 4Runners?

Looks like I see the Blue and Orange wire and the thick Blue wire isn't supposed to be there.

Well, I cant really understand how those books are suppose to help me. Maybe I havent studied them enough, maybe I'm an idiot who knows. I'm gonna have to take it somewhere its beyond my knowledge at this point. I will keep you guys updated tho

Don't get too hard on yourself. These books can be overwhelming.

What you want to do is just first find the "intro" and "how to use" sections for the circuit diagrams. It will explain symbols and what the lines mean and the abbreviations. It's the part where they have the color code breakdowns. You're looking for L=Blue, O= Orange, etc. Read both sections. Your head will swim.

Now...for this section of the car that you are working on...you will want to look for a small circle or rectangle marked "Fuel Pump". If you have the PDF, maybe it's searchable for "pump" or "fuel". I found it in the "overall electrical wiring diagram" (may as well start there). Look at the wires going in and out of it. One will be marked L-O. Now you should know from reading the intro that L= Blue and O = Orange stripe. So in your pic, you can see that L-O color coded wire going into where the fuel pump is. The other wire coming out of the fuel pump is "W-B" (White with Black Stripe) and the diagram tell you it goes to ground.

On my diagram that O-L wire looks like it should go UNBROKEN from the fuel pump to junction "IE1". Flipping through the manual, I found the pages where they show the locations of the junctions. IE1 is up under the dash.

Now look at the actual wiring on the car. Does the L-O wire actually go unbroken where it should? Does the W-B wire go directly to ground (left quarter panel inner)? I'm thinking one or the other does not...I would then remove whatever was added and put it back to stock form. Solder and heatshrink.

Look! You just traced your first component on this car! Now do the rest!

Bottom line is...if you can learn how to read the wire colors and how to spot them on the schematic, that will get you most of the way.

Looking at this mess, I do think that the previous owner wired a kill switch to the L-O fuel pump wire. I think I can see that wire butt connected to a red wire in the first picture. Looks like he ran it up front, so if you took your front driver side sill plate off, you'll probably see that solid red wire continue on to a switch...or something.

On your rear window issue...make sure the window lockout on the driver's door panel armrest isn't depressed. It locks out all windows including the back.
