Paint problems

Does anyone else find the 5gen paint to be just poor quality. I’ve owned numerous vehicles but I find my runner very suspect able to scratches and nicks. I don’t ever recall a vehicle with such a “soft” paint job.

 

I only know of white paint issues. But it is covered by the warranty program Toyota issued.

 

Since 2006 I've owned 2 Tacomas and my current 4Runner.

The paint job on all 3 has been poor IMO.

 

I’ve only had issues so far on the rear bumper. Probably cause it’s plastic.

 

The roof of my 2010 corolla is peeling badly. I waxed it 4 to 5 times a year too.

 

Toyota paint is shit. However Toyota white paint is diarrhea. Lol

 

In the last six years I've owned two 4Runners and three Tacomas. Paint on all five are complete shit. So yes, it's normal.

They are known in the industry to have the thinnest paint of all manufacturers. Not sure about Lexus.
My Xpel installer told me Toyota paint is shit. Hell after 1k miles it cost us $1k in paint corrections before they could wrap it!

how do you like your xpel? I’m picking up my 21 in the next few weeks and plan on doing it.

 

Well that sucks, just bought a white one, wish I would have found this forum before our purchase and went with a different color.

Absolutely love it! Even with the cost & ceramic coating it; it was worth every penny.
We got a foot of snow last week & the 4Runner (sitting, not getting salty) got even cleaner!
After just under 2 years I need to take it in & have the recoat it but it keeps the black very easy to maintain.
One negative is no more car washes. Fine by me. Hand washing is relaxing and fulfilling.
Xpel & covid are the reason for the lack of mods on our truck. I want sliders & a full rack but that is expensive if you use it for groceries!

that’s good to hear. My current one is ceramicly coated. However it’s being traded In and I wanted to do xpel to avoid rock chips in the bumper.

 

You will not be disappointed. Toyota paint is like 3mil IIRC & the Xpel is 8mil! Plus, it is self healing so no more trail rash!

XPEL has templates for the entire 4runner. Full front, roof, doors, quarter panels, hatch, rear bumper and spoiler.

 

Good to know mine is a 2020 so I was not aware of this !

 

No peeling but it’s like if you touch it, it scratches

 

I was told by the installer that there are different grades of Xpel and you had to be certified to buy the top end wrap. Didn't sound like BS as he is the only Xpel installer in town. Plus, it does have a 10 yr transferable warranty...
I don't have the knowledge or patience anyway. Plus, after 2 yrs & only 9k miles I hope it last us a very long time!

seems like Toyota, has been blinded by their successes in sales, etc...and are not paying attention to details...and eventually, it's going to come back and bite 'em on the rump..(sales) no excuse for stuff like this, to happen.

 

I had two Titans prior, that paint was horrible. Oxidation was INSANE

 

We only make one grade of film. Ultimate plus. We make it in 3 thickness levels. 7mil, 8 mil (standard) and 10 mil.
XPEL ultimate plus is a very very good film.

 

From that statement I read Xpel makes 3 grades/ levels of film.?
Unless I had knowledge of vinyl wrapping I would not feel comfortable applying such an important item to my vehicle.
No offense but who is "we"? Are you affiliated with Xpel?

Perhaps Toyota and XPEL are in bed together..

I had the TINIEST rock chip a bit of my paint away when it flew off of some dumb-asses weed-eater and into the side of my truck. $1000 later....

Other than that, it doesn't seem too bad. I haven't tried to buff out all of my trail stripes yet, but it doesn't look like any of them went TOO deep, fortunately. I don't think anything from branches made it through the color coat.
