4runner vs the new Ford bronco

If only they made a black interior. That would go great with silver or retro gold. Looks like tan or grey are the only options

no doubt it’s a sick looking rig. I’d certainly get one before a jeep.

 

I still don't like the headlights. And, the fender flares look cheap.

I would be concerned about reliability. They're not even available yet, and it appears that one is already being looked at by a mechanic!

 

I would pay asking price for that rig in a minute. It would have to be in front of me with a transferable title, though. I'm not handing over $37k in cash without both of those. That machine is beautiful.

 

2.7 and the 10 speed have been in the F150 for a few years now. Plus, that's what warranty's are for. Am I pretending this thing will be as reliable as my 4Runner was...nope. But this mother fucker is going to have some real get up and go...even with 37's.
It was between this and the Jeep Rubicon. I went with the Ford because of the motor, tranny, and the 4.7 gearing.
I dig the front end...I agree the flares look like shit. But they look much better on this rig sitting on 37's.

 

Of course I was only kidding. The 2.7 seems like a great motor.

The potential of being a happy medium between the 4runner and a Wrangler is appealing. It just turned out cheesy looking IMO. Maybe the actual production model will look better.

 

There is going to be so much after market douche bag stuff for the Bronco it will be like some Jeep's you see rolling around.

I am really starting to appreciate simple builds! I saw some 4runners at a "Mall Crawlers and Coffee" event awhile back and couldn't help but wonder how much some of that crap must snag branches in tighter trails. I'm heading towards a minimalist approach with mine.

How are you liking those ditch lights?

 

Ditch lights are great, but ran them forward facing. Hood glare was livable.
Agree, I like to keep it clean, low weight, and simple.
Shit man...I slum it in a ground tent with ZERO plans for RTT.

 

Agree. I call it OEM Plus. It basically looks stock but performs a lot better.

 

especially after speaking to a guy with my exact rig who couldn’t know when to quit I’ve decided to keep it simple and light too. No bumpers a better rack, better tires, wider rims. 11 mpg he quoted which is just not appealing.

 

Nice! I have mine pointed straight ahead as well, and the glare isn't bad, either.

I use a sleeping platform, but the platform also stows all of my tools and recovery gear underneath. I might try to lower it an inch or 2 this year.

I'm a little concerned about where I will end up with the new tires. If it really goes in the crapper, I might sell them and go back down a size.

Seriously, though. I was a Ford guy since my first car in 1984. In the 2000's, I bought three new Fords in a row. A Mustang, then a Mercury Milan, then a Fusion. I use nothing but synthetic fluids and baby my vehicles. The Mustang developed rattles and squeaks and needed a fuel pump. The Mercury was nice car, but the transmission went out at 40k miles. The Fusion was also great, but when I traded it in at 92k miles, the transmission was shot and the CV joints were making noise.

I drive a 2014 Ford Escape with 21k miles on it at work. Worst vehicle I've ever driven. It would take a couple of pages to list all of the things that have gone wrong with it and the design failures.

I rode in a buddy's 2 year old F-150 a few months ago when we went to lunch. 20k miles on it and a total yuppie vehicle. The thing rattled and squeaked horribly. Drove me nuts. My 4Runner has 20k miles on it and has seen hundreds of miles of washboard dirt and gravel roads and remains as solid as the day I drove it off the lot.

Sure, the drivetrain of the new Bronco is tested and somewhat reliable, but the body integrity and electrical system is not. Guaranteed there will be a ton of issues with rattles and squeaks and failed electronics. Guaranteed.

The Bronco is sexy and capable, but I don't have time to be going to the dealer every month for issues, and rattles drive me nuts.

 

Same. I've been overlanding for over a decade. Ground tents all the way, for hundreds of nights. I am not good at this overlanding thing, apparently.

 

Was either the Bronco or the Jeep.
Neither of which can come close to Toyota reliability.
I want more power and clearance.

Ummm.. It's only overlanding if you have a RTT. Otherwise it's just camping.

I use a ground tent when I know I'll have room to set it up, and there are other people around. I like the platform because it feels a bit safer in remote areas.

 

I can't afford to "overland", with all of the Yeti gear and $2000 tents. I just camp.

 

Funny...I feel safer with less people around.

There's arguments for everything. Some of those RTT's seem really nice. I like my platform, but I also love a ground tent. Of course, the RTT gets the most IG points.

 

I’ve always been bad at IG points. I get to about 3 hashtags and I give up.

 

It’s a long way down in the middle of the night if you need to get up to have a quick pee, as well.
