I know this topic has been brought up several times, and I have searched through the old threads and cant find my specific issue.

I picked up a set of Ultra TYype 164 rims 17x9 -12mm for my 2016 4runner SR5 which is bone stock. Custom Offsets told me they would work no problem. I also picked up a set of General Grabber ATX 265/70/17 (stock size) for the wheels.

When I went to have them installed, I found out that the front wheels rub the brake calipers and cant be installed. Custom Offsets only suggestion was to put on wheel spacers. So, i ordered a set of the of the 1.25 SpiderTraxx wheel spacers.

I finally got everything installed, and now I have rubbing. I saw this coming, so no big deal. I ran the for a few miles, so I could see where exactly I was rubbing, and adjust fender and mudflaps. However, this morning I see that I am rubbing on the BMC. I really dont want go to the BMC chop if I dont have to.

I was wondering if doing a 3in lift would help this issue ? I would rather go that route as opposed to the BMC. Would anyone else have any suggestions ?

    Thanks.

Hopefully I have included all needed information.

You’re rubbing on the brake caliper with a 17” wheel? Do you have pictures? I have a 17” as well as most people on here, and they clear the calipers. Other than that though if you maintain your current setup, some aftermarket adjustable upper control arms could help bring your caster forward to clear the body mount, and then you’d need to cut/adjust the fender liner accordingly.

Welcome to the forum, do you know the back space on the wheels? Someone should chime in shortly to help you out.

backspacing on the wheel is 4.5", with a -12mm offset.

Sorry no photos of this. I want to clarify as well, that when I saw the wheel is rubbing the caliper, I am referring to the inside face of the wheel.

Interesting. My wheel is 17x9 with 4.5” backspacing as well and don’t have any caliper clearance issues. Maybe it’s the wheel style? Some pictures would definitely help. At this point though only adjustable upper control arms will help bring the tire forward towards the front bumper. A 3” lift could help, but with a 1.25” wheel spacers and -12mm offset in the wheel, you’re looking at a wide stance which will rub with any tire size probably. Unless you’re dead set on those wheels, getting some new wheels might be a better option. Some control arms will run you about $600ish, and a set of wheel will run you about $1000. Im not an advocate for running spacers, but that’s just me.

Attached is a photo of the inside of the wheel. You can see the ring worn inside the rim from the brake caliper. This was done by the shop that attempted the install, so I'm not sure how it got there since the vehicle wasn't driven this way.

I put on a 1/4" spacer on the hub today and it seemed to give me 1/4"clearance from the brake caliper, so I dont think it would need much to clear the caliper. I didnt actually mount the tire since the studs are a little too short with the added spacer.

For the time being I have reinstalled the OEM wheels and my old tires till I get something figured out.

Could I just install longer studs and run the 1/4" spacers, or is this frowned upon ?

Lastly, since the tire is rubbing at mid-height (widest part of the tire) wouldnt a 3in lift kit help eliminate the rub on the body mount ? I am very inexperienced with this stuff, so im interested to learn why, or why wont this work.

Very weird it rubs caliper with that offset/bs. That is very odd.

I would think some arp studs with the small spacer would work and personally a better option. I’m not a fan of wheel spacers that require their own set of studs and lugs as it’s another failure point. That said my built prerunner runs them in back with no issues.

If it rubs now a lift would help but not stop it as the suspension articulates it will rub again. A new UCA could help get it the caster up which would move tire forward off body mount.

I would be contacting the wheel supplier you purchased it from and raise hell if they stated it would fit no problems. You are running stock tires, are forced to run spacers and still rub!

Good luck! Keep us in the loop with what ya do

@Dirt_Runner I actually just ordered a set of the ARP studs so I can run the small spacer. I'm planning on just doing this in the front for now. If you can tell a difference I'll place them on the back as well.
Another question on the lift....This 4runner is my wife's, and it is never driven off road. Would adding the lift and driving on road only still cause it to articulate enough to rub?

The part that's rubbing is the part of the brake caliper that sticks out the furthest. It's like a little strip thats about 5/8" wide and 1/4" tall. I should have grabbed a photo. If that didn't explain it too well, I can grab a photo online and lable what I'm referring to.

    Derp the caliper. Got ya.

not sure about rubbing if it’s just dallied around by the wife... have you seen how some of our wives drive!!! Lol
    :burnrubber:

lift with high caster UCAs will help. If/when you step up tire size after lifting you may be back in a rub situation. Body chop then.
