Rotopax curiosity and reply from Rotopax

I live at 4200 feet elevation but work at 1300 feet.
I'd like to have extra fuel on board e.g. Rotopax, especially after looking the the Rigd Ultraswing tire carrier.
Then thought back to 'normal' bottles traveling back and forth from home to work=expansion and contraction.

So I thought I'd write Rotopax and ask about venting-
Their resonse-

With gasoline cans we do suggest venting them daily especially when changing elevation. If the container isn't vented this may result in bloating of the container which will void all warranties.'

I'm just too old and lazy to vent when I get to work and when I get back home.
I have a Pelican Box that self-vents for atmospheric changes.

Thoughts anyone?

 

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have 2 Rotopax's on my RZR - one with fuel and one with water. I've never had an issue with driving from Phoenix to Delores, CO or Moab, UT. I've unscrewed the cap a bit when I get there and then tighten it - voila - pressure fixed. I've never held much stock on "warranties" on a $100 product. They will fight your claim no matter when and make you prove you didn't violate the warranty, which is a major PITA. That's why companies who offer a no questions asked warranty (like Leupold and Vortex) are so welcome. Any warranty that has stipulations is simply lawyer talk of a way they can deny replacing the product.

 

Skip the rotopax and get wavian Jerry cans. No need to vent and won’t leak or burst. I’ve been from 0-12000 feet and back multiple times with no problems.

I bought one last summer after some research and based on @shellshock 's recommendation. I am extremely impressed with it. It rode around in the back or my 4runner for a 3 day weekend and I never smelled the slightest hint of fuel.

Plus three for wavian I have rotopax and I have experienced them swell as well as suck themselves in. I’ve not had one crack but I don’t doubt it will eventually. I only carry as a have to now.


It may be hard to tell that it’s almost sucked in completely flat but this was after a trip where we changed elevation and temp from around 65-70 degrees to 40 ish and elevation from 7600ft to around 2300ish

it sucked in so much that the lock and handle were no longer holding it secured to the truck.

 

I definitely recommend wavian too. Used to have rotopax but I had same issues as newlife. Both type of containers worked but I just prefer the wavian jerry cans now.

 

I find steel jerry cans (wavian / etc) unwieldy. Picked up 2 of these "U" Jugs and love them. So much easier to handle for fueling up my riding mower. I have a hatch ladder in my garage I need to put on the 4Runner. Then I'm going to get a mount for the U Jug.

So no issues with expansion/contraction with the Wavians. OK noted on that.
Seems like if I go that route I'd put it on the roof rack, def. an option.

DRobs I'm looking forward to seeing the U-jug on the rack---pics please.
For me though I'd think the plastic U-jug would suffer the same expansion/contraction that the Rotopak would.

No big trips for a while so plenty of time for study but am taking notes.
