4runner vs the new Ford bronco

I heard the new Bronco is going to be a chick vehicle.

 

Could very well be.
Have you seen the Cactus Gray color? Almost as bad as the vaggy Lunar Rock.

 

I really would like to think Toyota will go in this direction with the next 4runner, but I doubt it. I would love to see a TRD off-road or PRO with upgrades that really matter, like skid plates, rock sliders, etc.

Maybe I'll check one of these out when they hit showrooms. If nothing else, it will remind me why I like the 4runner.

Personally, I think the pricing is excellent. You can get a vehicle that will run circles around a PRO for less money.

 

If Toyota announces something exciting between now and summer of 21..I'll be all ears.

I don't think they are purposely putting out junk; I think they are simply incapable of creating a dependable vehicle on a consistent basis. I owned a 2014 Ram 1500 Tradesman. Low option vehicle that I lifted and added the usual off-road goodies to. Never had a problem with it. Had it to about 55k miles and it remained solid and not a single issue. 400hp and 17 mpg. Loved it. I thought maybe Fiat-Chrysler had got their heads out of their butts.

When I was shopping for SUVs, the 4Runner was the top of the list. My girlfriend was lobbying hard for a Wrangler Unlimited, and I simply went to a Jeep forum and spent a few minutes reading about all of the common serious problems with brand new vehicles and the headaches new owners were dealing with. I showed the Jeep forum to her, and then this forum, and said I was getting a 4Runner for obvious reasons.

My brother bought an old Jeep YJ about 7 years ago for $5500. He drove the snot out of it and had a few minor issues. Just had a new baby and was forced to sell it. It had around 150,000 miles, was dented, beat up, and was not a clean vehicle at all. He just sold it for $7500. Unbelievable.

 

It didn't take too much longer than that for my Jeep Liberty to have problems. That's pretty low mileage to say that there were no problems.

I also don't think they're purposely putting out junk, but there's got to be something in their corporate culture that makes them so crappy. As Chrysler has become more Fiatized, some people have argued that it's the Italian sports car influence that's causing problems. Even the diesels which should run and run and run have begun conking out at less than 100,000 miles.

Maybe one day I'll get another TJ. I want to get an earlier one from before Daimler tried making them even cheaper, though. I know they mucked with things with the good old AMC engine and the transmission in the last few years of the TJ.

 

I decided to run a couple more builds on the base Bronco because I was curious. These are without the Sasquatch Package and other off road goodies. These builds are more comparable to the SR5 4Runner. They're mostly without options, but one major thing that I did do with these builds that I also did with my Sasquatch build a few posts up that I didn't mention back then there is that I did go with hard top, sound deadener, and roof rails The 4 door defaults to soft top. I also popped in the 6 cylinder in both because the 6 cylinder should hold up better for a longer time with a turbo than the 4 cylinder should.

The 4 door turned out to be $38,440. Depending on how reliable the Bronco turns out to be, this could be a good alternative to an SR5. With the 4 doors, it's more directly comparable to the 4Runner.

The 2 door turned out to be $33,045. Holy crap. If I was of the same mindset that I was when I got my SR5 and my Jeeps before that, what with me not knowing anything about off roading and being one of those people that would never take it on dirt, I would be 100% happy with the 2 door at that price. Part of that is that I enjoyed my old TJ and thought about looking at the Suzuki Samurai to replace my Jeep Liberty earlier this year before I realized that Suzuki has been gone from the US market for 10 years. The JL was the only game in town for a 2 door SUV, and I didn't want an unreliable piece of junk again. Yeah, this is kind of subjective because I would have preferred to have a 2 door vehicle, but I'm a case of Ford catering to an audience that simply wasn't being catered to. I would have never taken it on dirt, and I would have been so happy with it, especially if it turns out that it's a quality vehicle that'll last a long time without many issues. I never would have even looked at the 4Runner.

Once again, I'd be crazy to get rid of my 4Runner. I'll probably still be driving my 4Runner long after Ford discontinues the new Bronco if it goes the way of the FJ. My Jeep Liberty spooked me so hard when it came to its unreliability that I went into getting my 4Runner for reasons of reliability above all else. However, if Ford pulls off an actually reliable Bronco, they are going to cut into the 4Runner customer base. That's how much the new Bronco appeals to me.

 

I really like the Bronco, but I'm almost 50 and having the shiny new toy is not as important to me anymore. Especially not with the economy the way it is. I chose the 4R for its looks, capability, simplicity and reliability. The new Bronco will probably only give me capability at this point. I might look at the Bronco in 3-5 years once they work out the kinks.

 

The 2 door is interesting to me since it will always be just me and a dog. And whatever chick I can talk into riding with me at the time.

 

yeah, I would probably wait to see how the new models pan out...what potential issues might crop up...and let someone else take the hit..before jumping into the fold...

 

Does the new Ford Bronco come with eletronic engine sounds? If not that’s a big deal breaker for me.......:lol

4runner or toyota in general for life, those bullet proof engines. Their reliability never disappoints. Ford and even Jeep either a hit or miss except for f150s. Had fords before and even a jeep fixed countless shit on there for years. Glad someone totaled it and put it out of its misery

 

Looks good but it's probably put together with lowest bidder components and its built by unreliable UAW workers. So I'll be sticking with the 'old reliable' 4runner.

 

There’s no amount of savings or capability for a bronco then what I got with my 4runner. Will the 2.7 be more powerful and faster sure but it’s still a slow truck. How many fords besides an f150 you see running around that are more than 5 years old. You don’t because mostly they are gone to wreckers. Oh no I can’t do the rubicon stock like a bronco. Boohoo. At least I will make it home without a check engine light and all my window switches working.

I'd consider the 7 speed if I got a Bronco, because the 10 speed auto on my 2018 was not smooth to drive in the city due to the select shift 1 - 3 - 5 shifts. However, on the highway, gears 6 - 10 were so smooth I couldn't feel it shift. That is, until a 6-7 shift developed a really strange bang. Ford updated software it called the "Transmission Shift Strategy" and it was noticeably better, but I wonder if it was just a patch to hide a clutch that was burning out at only 28,000 miles.

At 25k both front wheel bearings were going and replaced under warranty. Right side was gone and whining something FIERCE, left was scored. They replaced both IWE too cause one looked like the diaphragm was damaged.

At 5k, 12k, and then at 25k when they replaced my hubs they also repaired the check valve for the poorly engineered 4wd system. At the 25k they replaced the vacuum solenoid to activate the 4wd. The problem will occur for many people and continue to because if you don't pull enough vacuum when you crank up the vehicle, before you move, the IWEs don't unlock (default position is locked). This results in 2wd on transfer case, and the front hubs locked in, adding wear and lowering MPG, and when turning, creating a very unsettling grinding noise like gears not meshing...cause they were.

Lastly, the 10 speed rattled when you cranked it, but it eventually stopped after the vehicle warmed up a bit. I never figured out where that was coming from.

That said, the 3.5L EB was just simply badass. I'd consider a Ford again, but it's nice to have a boring vehicle that isn't higher maintenance. Owned a 2011 Silverado until 2017 as well, kinda same stuff. No showstoppers but constant annoyances. Owned a total of 5 Toyotas since 2006 and I did one airbag recall and the Entune head unit had some issues on one. That's the total amount of dealer visits across the 5 and over 10+ years. People say American quality is improving but so is Japan, probably at a slower velocity than Japans as well.

 

No dis-respect to Ford. I own one. My neighbors where burning trash last night. It happens when its cold or when there are mosquitoes...And I have to get the hell out....

Then he camped too close to the river and it flooded, blew the engine and trans went out..

 

Many of the very few times Ive posted on here, it was to praise this thing. This is the only suv ill drop the 4runner for. And I only want the 1HZ 4.2 Naturally Aspirated diesel I6. All mechanical engine.

I've only owned 150s never had an issue with any of them. I still wouldn't buy a new year run of any rig, look at the newer Rav4. Can't speak now but peaked into the forums couple yrs back when it came out and many many issues so yeah, ole faithful Toyota can spit out a turd once and awhile.

 

Drove one a couple times in Africa. A bit of a bumpy ride. I want the 4 door pickup version.

 

Be that as it may, the Broco is good offroad, blah blah blah. For my offroading needs, the TRD Offroad is more than sufficient. I will do trails that will not destroy my car, I have nothing to prove if I need to wreck the ride, and if I MUST reach those places, there are other means. 99% of the offroad vehicles out there are pavement queens and front lawn ornaments. The Bronco will just be another "jeep" with those googly eyes and oversized tires to go get another mac from the mall.
I can't unload my Mustang fast enough to buy another Toyota/Lexus car. I am so tired of dash noises, hard shifts, poor quality control, cheap plastics, poor fittings, misaligned panels, cheap speakers, leaking engines and trannies, unreliable cars.
At the end of the day, it is just another Ford. I suggest you drive the 10 speed tranny with the ecoboost, what a match made in the lowest levels of QQ. They have nice ideas, they have good engineers, but when the bean counters come on, it all falls apart like a deck of cards.

 

Im jealous af. Ill enjoy the bumps with solid axles front and rear. I would seriously pay 5k overprice to have a new HZ J76 wagon here. NEW!!!

Actually, I looked at the specs. I was a little unsure about the price, but then seeing the specs I can see why. That vehicle makes me very happy. It's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for when I ended up getting my 4Runner last year.
