    Hello,
    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I just bought my first 4Runner and would like to thank you all for the valuable information on this wonderful forum.

I consider myself very lucky to be able to find my 4Runner. It's a 2015 SR5 with only 27,045 miles. Bought it from the first owner who for some reason reason hasn't been driving it much since late 2018 and finally decided to sell it.
It's extremely clean in and out the only problem is that the previous owner was neglecting it maintenance wise. I did the basic service and fuel Injectors service at the dealer who assured me that's all it needs for now.

I just noticed the typical sluggish performance that I need to get used to hopefully nothing major there that needs attention.
I also noticed that the tires are the original stock Dunlop that came with the truck which are five years old and I'm debating to replace soon.
Other than that, I'm very happy with the 4Runner.

Again, thank you for the wonderful forum.

    Mike

Welcome to the forum from Wisconsin!

I would definitely start looking at tires if yours are 5+ years old. Those Dunlops aren't that great even when new. :D

I took my 4RUNNER on it's first long trip about 500 miles round trip, mainly freeways. I knew about the sluggish performance but I was a bit concerned during hill climbing. I was not getting much of a response from the accelerator and had to get to the far right slow lane.
The good news is that it didn’t heat up and I didn't notice anything unusual. However, it was really sluggish, is this something that I just have to I've with it? Your thoughts please.

    Thanks
    Mike

I take it that the little things were checked over when you bought it.... right? Air filter and things like that. Maybe it needs a basic tune-up, either way, I don't believe 4Runners are known to be "barn-burners." It's hard to say if anything is wrong, was there a big hill involved? What was the temp. outside? It's good that you took it on a "shakedown" cruise though, that's exactly how I would have done it. Hope you can get this figured out..... how about fuel filter?

I have not had an experience where mine was so sluggish I had to get in the far right lane. I have driven in the Sierra Mtns, driven to Oregon, and other steep inclines but never felt like it was sluggish to the point I was concerned. I am a courteous driver and do move over so I am not ignorant of those behind me; I do drive fast though.

I would look at getting it a once over if if were me.

I've done everything the dealer recommended except the fuel filter.
There were several steep hills that I consider a challenge for smaller and older cars but I climbed before with other older and newer cars but nothing was as difficult as this drive and it was night time and cold.
I'll take it to my mechanic this time and see what he says.
    Thank you for your input!

I'll take it to my mechanic this time and see what he says and will post back. I had concerns about the breaks as well at first and he told me that's how the 4Runners feels like and its a matter of getting used to it. He said not to compare it with my Prius Plug-in :)
    Thank you!

    Hello,
I took my 4Runner to my trusted mechanic. Regarding the sluggishness, he thought it may be sludge for being low mileage as it may have sat with old oil for long intervals. He also mentioned that the last oil change may be with the wrong oil/weight.
He changed the oil with Mobil 1 0W-20W Advanced Fuel Economy full synthetic.
To my surprise, that made a huge difference. The acceleration and shifting responses are like night and day.

Disappointed as the last oil change was done at Toyota dealer, that I've known for a while servicing my Prius. I think the last oil change was a rush job.
Anyway, I just wanted to share with you the good news that my 4Runner performance is much better and it's not sluggish any more. I'm relieved.
    Thanks for all your input.
