I get a weird rattle noise coming from the lower engine area while idling and accelerating from a stop. It sounds like a bolt rattling in a metal pan. It’s not a all the time thing and goes away with in seconds or accelerating.
I’ve gotten under and checked all the shields, skid plates etc and I can’t find a thing. I’ve done a lot of mods and checked to make sure everything is correct and right.
Any help where I can start looking would be greatly appreciated.

Would it be possible to catch a video or audio of this? The 4.0 is a noisy motor. It might not be a problem.

I did get a rattling once when a small rock was in the skid plate and vibrating against the exhaust at low speed.

Yes I’ll try again. Since it not a all the time thing and I usually hear it when in a drive though and such. It’s difficult. Since I have 60k on it I’m used to the normal engine noise and this isn’t normal.

Ok. Just wanted to make sure you were familiar with the lifter noise. :)

Now, I'm curious! Hopefully it's something simple. :homer:

Yeah me too. It almost sounds like something is loose rattling. It’s a Metal on metal sound

Maybe a heat shield on the exhaust, or loose bolt in a skid plate. I know that crossover pipe on the exhaust likes to rattle.

Subbed for other ideas, and conclusion.

Nope I took it off to double check. I got a recording I’m trying to upload but it says that I don’t have the right extension

Well I finally got to the bottom of my noise. It appears to be my exhaust. I finally got to hear it when I wasn’t driving and was able to get underneath it while it was making it. I replaced my stock one with the Pro Exhaust so I’m assuming either I missed something or it’s binding some how.

Apparently it’s coming from this connection. It came with a new gasket which I replaced. So I’m not sure what i did wrong.

Turns out the gasket went bad. Lucky I kept all the old stock exhaust parts when I installed the pro exhaust and reused the old one. I noticed that the original one was a lot beefier than the one that came with the Pro exhaust. I should have just reused the old one at the time and saved myself some trouble.

My FJ had the same noise caused by the same thing. Replaced the gasket and all is quiet again
