Oil filter oil leak?

It was time for me to do an oil change so I took the skid plate off and saw a mess... I thought maybe I didn’t tight the housing enough on my last oil change and moved on with the job. I checked again and saw a small leak around the filter housing.

I changed the filter and The o rings and torqued the filter housing to 18ft lbs. it only leaks when the car is on. Very minimum but am thinking if I need to take it in to the dealership... or is this “normal”?

and yes. I cleaned the area, let the car run and still saw this leak developing.

 

Did you have a *lot* of oil on the skid plate? Or just a little of that thin 0W-20 that spread all around?
I also use the aluminum oil filter housing and last time I changed the oil I started the engine and checked for leaks. I noticed that seepage around the filter housing to engine interface. I cleaned it up, left off the skidplate, and kept checking and cleaning it for several days. It kept “leaking” around the seam for about 3 days. Then stopped. I figured that it was actually the oil in the threads of the housing that I didn’t clean very well before screwing it on, and it gradually worked it’s way out.

Maybe this is what happened to you. I’m going to clean the threads better next time.

Or maybe it’s a faulty housing. Have you been using this for a long time?

 

My oil filter housing is dry every single time I’ve changed my oil (twice now). I would maybe document this yourself, and then move onto the dealer if it increases and/or there is lots of oil in the area.

 

That actually makes sense. Maybe I need to clean the threads better.

I saw a lot of oil when I took the skid plate off. But enough to keep the safe oil level.

I’ve used this filter housing for about 5k miles.

I’m gonna order the Toyota OEM one and see if this one keeps leaking.

Hmmm. Yeah, I have an OEM version. IIRC it was about $25. It’s worth a try. Another characteristic is that you don’t really get to get that torque feeling like the plastic one. The metal one butts right up to the engine and stops. You can’t really tighten it any more.

 

nah the OEM metal housing. I had a blast trying to take the plastic one off before. Lmao

Note that you have to swap the inner central screen tower with the one from your OEM plastic housing.
