I Need new Tires...

Hi All-

Looking to replace my Nitto Terra Grappler All Terrains that came standard on my 2017 TRD Pro. I am a novice w/ tires and want something that is at least comparable to the Nittos...or I might just get a new set of the Nittos. Unfortunately, I don't get to off-road as much as I like, so they have to be good on the highway. Any thoughts?

 

If you're not off-roading much, stick to an SL rated tire, as opposed to LT (load range C, D, E...).

Being in the north, a 3 peak mountain snowflake rated tire is ideal if you're using them year round. These snow rated tires are not all created equal, though, so definitely shop around.

There are a lot of good AT options right now. A good way to narrow it down is to put your vehicle info in on discounttire.com or Tirerack.com and then filter by ratings and pick what looks good to you.

These are almost 10# lighter than the LT/E version, so you'll get better gas mileage.

 

I have those in a 275 E rating. I dig em! Got about 30k on them, still good. I'll be getting them again but in a 285.

 

I have C load toyo at3’s and ko2’s. I highly recommend the toyo. Not the ko2 so much.

 

Pep Boys is currently running a buy two - get two free sale on certain tires, including Cooper Adventurer AT's, which look just like AT3's. I priced out a set of stock size SL rated for mine, and it came to 450 mounted and balanced, before tax.

I wanted something a little more aggressive, but that's a pretty had deal to pass up. Anything cooler is going to be at least 2x the price OTD.

 

I have a 2017 Pro. Currently shopping for tires myself. I'm pretty set on the Toyo AT3's but the General A/Tx's were a close 2nd. I ran BFG K02's previously on my Tacoma. They were solid off-road but a little stiffer than stock tires on the highway. I think all 3 are good options. I'm just looking to try something different.

 

I have this on mine. Drove home after installation makes me smile. Quieter than stock ( surprise). Balance so good, no vibration no problems. I almost bought a 2nd set because it was on sale. $470 /4 tires delievered.

I think I finally decided on these for mine. I love the look of the BFG, but have heard too many bad things. I think the Falkens are ugly, and am quite frankly tired of hearing about them. They've also gotten more expensive, and IMO have lost their value advantage.

Very close 2nd choice is the Toyo AT3, I love the tread and have read great things, though I kind of think they missed the boat with the sidewall.

Called my local Toyota dealer today, they're perpetually running a buy 3/get 1 free promotion. I got prices on the Toyo and General in 265/70/17, SL.

188/EA for the AT3, 196 for OWL. She said the OWL has better availability, the blackwall is a little scarcer right now. Obviously OWL can be turned around, but it's still an extra 24 bucks/set.

162/ea for the ATX in SL.

Both of those come with free 2 year road hazard coverage.

For kicks and giggles I checked on the 255/80/17 AT3, the woman in parts dept found that size very interesting and had to search a few suppliers for it. 202/ea, but does not qualify for the free road hazard due to being from a different supplier.

REALLY tempted by the 255 Toyos, but it's more money because I'd need to buy 5, and if I'm honest with myself I don't NEED a bigger tire. No sense messing with the drivability for no reason.

So, I'm pretty set on the Generals, read a lot of great reviews, and I like the look of the sidewall. My thinking on that is not just purely aesthetic, I think that since I'm going with a SL, the extra rubber on the side of the General may offer some additional protection. I could be off base, but it looks like when aired down that sidewall may help deflect rocks a bit.

After thinking about it today, I need to call them back and set up an appt.

I really dig the white letters with the white paint. I was considering the white for mine too, but it's silver and I don't think it will look as good. Plus, we're going into winter and there's no way I'm going to put in the effort to keep the letters clean, haha.

 

leave it out, until it dirty or fade just paint them black. some member suggested that if you leave them in you will see and more awkward. you can always paint them too.

I think they look equally good.

 

Do all the ATX's come with one side with the white letters or did you choose the white letter specifically? I don't really care about seeing them from the inside, I'm no that picky. I ran Duratracs like that on my old Jeep, white letter IN, and they got dirty fairly quickly and I didn't notice them.

On certain tires I really like the white letters, depending on the size and font. Like I love the way Coopers look, I like how the white is just an outline. I ran old school ST's on my old ZJ years ago and loved the white letters out.

 

I'm just going to get a set of these and call it a day.

 

I didn't' pick in beginning I never want white out. I just test fit and like it. I think most ATX tires come with white letters that I have seen.
