Popping/screeching at full steering lock?

    Hey guys, I just put new half shafts in a '93 for a friend. Took it out for a test drive and the only thing I notice is weird metallic popping/screeching at FULL steering lock, and I mean FULL. Come off the steering stops just a bit and it's gone.

    This is definitely not the pump or a belt, it's more of a "metallic screech", but sometimes a metallic pop. Doesn't sound like what a bad CV sounds like either because it's not a constant click click click -- it's kinda random and very inconsistent.

    I get in 2wd or 4wd so that seems to make the new CV's even less suspect, but this vehicle does not have manual lockouts so the shafts do have to spin all the time, but of course they're not under power in 2wd.

    I climbed under at full lock and don't see anything hitting anything.

    I do know the ball joints aren't fantastic, but will these BJ's make noise while static in a tight turn?

    Is it possible the new CV's are binding up and I need to adjust steering stops? (I fear they're seized, truck is kinda rusty)

    Also I searched as I bet something like this has been covered before, but I didn't get any pertinent results

    RevTek 3" front- 2" rear leveling, JBA uca's, LED interior lights, Cooper 275-70-17 AT3 LT
    Is the vehicle lifted? I'm not positive, but, if it is lifted maybe the angles are wrong on the cv joints? Hub bearings?

    So in thinking further on this, my THEORY(IES) are that it's likely one of 2 things:

    Slight movement allowed by less-than-stellar BJ's allows the steering stop adjustment bolt and "stop" on the LCA to basically scrape on one another

    Or maybe the control arms are being forced around at full lock and bad pivot bushings are allowing the arm(s) to somehow scrape the subframe. At times the metallic screech seemed triggered by small bumps in my dirt test lot, ie suspension movement seemed to sometimes (but not always) cause it

    Oh and apologies - forgot to respond to above - but vehicle is stock height and wheel bearings seem quite good. Vehicle has 278k, seems to have been marginally maintained at best and came from somewhere where rust is far more prevalent than my native locale of SW CO (things don't hardly rust here, there's just zero humidity)

    Your steering stops are most likely the culprit. Mine does that too and that is what I was told. I decided not to replace them and I just never hit them anymore.

    This was in another post somewhere. I believe the steering stops at one point in time have rubber caps on them. They deteriorate after time causing metal on metal at full lock.

    Put a dab of grease on the stops, that will keep them quiet for awhile.
