I typically do a lot of my own basic maintenance and looking at getting a TPMS programming tool. My Ram was automatic. What is needed in order to do it? Any tools that aren't $250. I'm seeing some on Amazon for cheap, but with questionable reviews.

I just bought the Autel TS508 and it worked great for activating and relearning the new Toyota TPMS sensors I put in the new wheels. It will only program the Autel MX sensors, but programming the Toyota sensors is not necessary. I paid !160 delivered from a vendor on eBay.

I believe there was something "special" about the 2020s TPMS so be careful.

Even some dealers didn't have the stuff the re-program.

Good point I believe the 2020 use a different frequency sensor, but perhaps there is a built in DIY.

Techstream is an awesome tool. You can code doors, windows, keys and TPMS. I got mine from Amazon last year for like $25. Comes with software and cable.

I had seen this in the manual. I was a bit confused on what it was actually accomplishing is it rebooting the sensor system, is it actually locating the sensor positions. I initially took it mean the system reboot, but i might be wrong. I could try and test it by changing the pressure in a specific tire during rotation to see if it moves. I love step 5, drive straight line 25mph+ for 30 minutes. I guess i need to go to the midwest to reprogram tires!

Thanks all for the feedback, I'll try digging into the DIY process and see if that does what I need it to do.

    Rehashing this...

Local off road shop ordered wheels and tires and installed aftermarket sensors for me. They and local Toyota couldn't register them because they claim their equipment wasn't setup for 2020 yet (really). I've been trying to do the above registration process myself. The directions are a bit lackluster, but nonetheless I did the wheel set change and then drove to work (minimal stopping, 40ish mph most the way, 25 minute drive). No luck from there. I'm confused if I need to go to wheel set change after each time of starting the 4r? There was a mention that going in reverse cancels the registration process...

I guess the last question from is if there is a difference between 2019 and 2020 wheels sensors? I wonder if he ordered the wrong part number not realizing or the wrong one was sent.

    The one BAM lists for 2018-2020 4Runners (p/n 42607-35040 2018-2020 4Runner) lists all 2018, 2019, and 2020 trim levels as a fit.

parts.toyota.com lists the same part number as fitting 2018-2020 4Runners.

So that might be a fair indication that the same TPMS sensor is used in 2018, 2019, and 2020 4Runners.

When I tried to reprogram my 2019 ORP ECU when I swapped in new tires and wheels, I couldn't get my Autel TS508 to succeed until I upgraded the firmware on the TS508. Perhaps there's a new firmware version needed for the programming devices to work with the 2020s!?

Well the sensor part number is promising. I'll try and reinitiate the registration process on the way home today and see if i have any better luck.

I have read of others having problems with aftermarket TPMS sensors, but the aftermarket ones Tire Rack sent me with my winter tires (Blizzak DM-V2) and wheel pkg worked just fine.

Here's the line item from my Tire Rack order (specifically stated as for a 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road) :

Hey @runner4it ...did you ever make it anywhere with this? I just picked up a second set of wheels and installed them in the garage on my 2021 OR. Having the same issue. Ran through the process in the owner's manual with no success.

My local off road shop that mounted and balanced the new wheels ended up doing the initial programming to the vehicle and then ive been able to do auto learn since then when rotating tires.

Should be. I don't know how hard it will be if you plan the change between wheels often. I did have to wait a couple days while they got the programmer software updated to work with 2020+ vehicles.

Do not do the change wheel set, I did it on mine and the tpms light just stayed on. America's tire was able to get it off with their calibration tool but now my tire pressure reading on the dash doesn't come on.

Once they are programmed to the vehicle you can do the tire pressure set which only relocates the wheel position without issue. The change wheel set process would not work with aftermarket sensors, but the pressure set does.

Aftermarket sensors will work if you have the right equipment. Also depends on which aftermarket sensors compatible. Most people dont know how to program aftermarket sensors and they just say they don't work. The reason some place couldn't handle TPMS at the time is they have not update their tools; but at this moment you dont have any issues unless you just go out and buy whatever sensors and expect them to program for you.

ANYONE in DC, VA, MD if you have problems with programming TPMS pm me.

What is the "right equipment"? Does that hinge on what kind of sensor was put in?

Oem scanners and few TPMS tools. Some tools will work with specific sensors so that's why we carry a few to be able to do them.

I just had my local mechanic install aftermarket sensors in with my winter wheels and right now my truck is trying to learn them. I will report back if this is successful or not because when I called him he said his scan tool gave him no option for a 2020 so he asked me to go through the onboard change wheels setup.

Well that is fantastic, so I guess a trip back to the shop is in store. So reading your earlier posts he will need to update his scan tool and verify with his supplier that the sensors he put in are compatible correct?

Over the years I’ve learned to stick with OEM Toyota TPMS sensors, even if they’re expensive. Some things in life aren’t worth the hassle. If I have to walk over shards of glass to force something to work, it had better be really worth it. I guess that’s what being old does to you. Good for you guys to put up the good struggle though.

ya know the world is upside down when Toyota makes TPMS swaps an expensive hassle requiring special equipment, while BMW just works with any old sensors without any user intervention at all.

I had generic sensors on a winter wheel set from Tire Rack for my 2016 BMW and the computer picked them up immediately -- I didn't have to do a thing but bolt the wheels on and drive.

Toyota: Expensive, unreliable and a hassle. Requires proprietary equipment.
BMW: Cheap and easy as pie. Generic no problem.

    LOL the world's gone mad.
