Lamin-X Film Fog Covers

Hey gang, searched but could not find anything on this. Anyone been running Lamin-X film fog light covers on their 5th gen for a while?

The stock fogs get kinda hot...just wondering if that has created any issues for long-term users?

(I know, get the "real" thing with Bajas, etc., but not ready to spring for them and quite frankly, not sure I really need...just going for the "look")...

 

I run it on my runner and did as well on my Tacoma. Never a single issue, super easy to install and remove able if ever your heart so desires. The heat generated helps remove any bubbles that are left from install- hair dryer helps too.

 

I use the yellow film. I got the universal sized sheet for like $10 on Amazon (at the time). It was like 6” x 10” (or something like that). I cut it in half and stuck them on. Then trimmed with an x-acto knife.

Its been on for 3 years and looks like day 1.

Agree with all here, almost a year on mine now, had some on wrx for many years, work great . Surely there are many many many threads on this, here and probably at t4r too.

 

They still have the universal cut sheet of yellow on Amazon for $10.

 

Running them on the 4Runner and Tundra

 

I have the Toyota LED fog lights and really like them. So much brighter and they throw light to the sides as designed. They are actually listed as a Tundra product but they fit the 4Runner.

I got the chrome version. Toyota Foglight Chrome (PT413-42190) or black (PT413-42191)

Put lamin-x selective yellow on fogs before installing them. Order directly from Lamin-x. Get the Toyota Tundra 14+, p/n T147Y. It’s more oval than the 4Runner version. Fit the LED fogs perfectly: Toyota Tundra (14- ) Fog Light Covers

 

People were saying they had to put multiple layers on to get rid of a a weird color projection because the film is made for halogen bulbs and not led’s.

Selective Yellow Lamin-x film filters out the blue-violet colors from the light, no matter the source. It works really well with the Toyota OEM LED fog lights for me. Adding more layers would dim the output more, not to mention the pain of applying one layer on top of another.
Could you provide more info on this color projection anomaly?

 

Does anybody have any pictures of the led fog lights with lamin x on at night?

Is the Tundra lamin x film larger than the 4Runner round ones (T649Y)?

 

I'd opt for stock halogen with Lamin-x over the Baja Designs SAE fog lights any day. The Baja fogs suck out loud. No idea why anyone even runs them, other than the hype.

 

Yes. The 4Runner stock halogen fog lights are round, and they don’t do much for visibility in fog, smoke, or snow. Pretty pathetic. No use in spending any money or effort applying Lamin-x to them. Get the Tundra LED fogs.

The Tundra ones are slightly oval and a little larger. They work so much better. I’ll try to take pics later tonight.

 

Alternatively, for the price of factory Tundra LED fogs and Lamin-X ($112 + $15 = $127), you can score a pair of SS3 sports for a few bucks more on a Black Friday sale ($200 at 20% off = $160). Just food for thought!

 

Are the sports really a big performance bump over the oem’s?

 

I don't have personal experience with the sports, as I have pros installed. But both the sport and the pro are leaps and bounds better than the nearest competitor. Plenty of info in the shootout thread on Tacomaworld. Links at the top of the first post:

Can attest to pros being leaps and bounds over stock and the Baja’s I have the pros on mine and it’s a huge difference just don’t run them on in city traffic.

^ If you already have it, sure. But Tory made a great point. It's almost unbelievable how, basically, the best selective yellow fogs that are available for our trucks are so inexpensive. DD SS3 Sports are a no-brainer if actual fog light performance is very important to you. I'm not hating on the laminx sheets, they have their place. They look cool (to each his own), and also protect the lights themselves. However, they don't actually do a great job of filtering out the blue light, while also filtering out some overall light which effectively dims your overall performance. Still, if fog-lighting ability isn't paramount, it's a fine cheap mod for most folks.

I wouldn't worry about the heat. Many fog lights get quite warm and it's actually considered to be a feature since it can melt off the snow/ice. If it doesn't burn your finger, it's probably fine.

 

Skip the fogs and just get real lighting a 20 inch rigid into the grill like I have also it has a real throw like a flame torch light

This is ill-advised, as the Baja squadron (sport, racer, or pro) is not a fog light. It is an offroad light that fits in the fog bucket. Yes, there is a difference.

While it makes a great light for offroading, it does not have a pattern or cutoff that will work well in actual fog or inclement weather. Turning them on in the fog/snow will just bounce light back into your eyes and make it harder to see.

There's no problem with auxiliary lighting provided you don't use it on the road (especially with opposing traffic). But a light bar is a poor replacement for an actual fog light, which has a wide, low pattern with a cutoff. This helps illuminate the edges of the road at low speed under the fog, reducing reflected light that would fatigue the driver's eyes.

Turning a light bar on in the fog/snow/dust is worse than high-beams. There is a place and purpose for different kinds of light. Use them wisely.

I think you’re referring to the Baja’s being so scattered and not a clear cut off.
What I’m stating is the diode dynamic ss3’s are the best over all bang for your buck when discussing an aftermarket fog solution. When I say they are leaps over stock and the Baja’s that is what I mean. The Baja’s have no definitive cut for them to act as fogs and instead create a cloud of light that will just hit back at you. The diode dynamics are much much more focused than the Baja’s and ever over the stock housings. Now the 2021 fogs my wife’s stock led housing does create a much more precise and crisp pattern but it is still not as good IMO as the ddss3

As a fog light, yes. As general off-road lighting I'm sure it's fine.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood what you meant in your original post. Yes, you are right. Also, the SS3 sport lights are much crisper than the pros as well. The TIR optic is actually optimized for the smaller and less powerful Luxeon chips, and they are one of the few (or only) aftermarket fog lamps to comply with the newer SAE J583 F3 spec, which mandates a very crisp cutoff.

The pro lamps use a bigger and more powerful Cree XPL chip. This makes the light brighter, but reduces the crisp focus of the optic since it is larger than the Luxeon chip. These lamps still meet the older (but still legal) J583 F spec.

Both are legal to use on the road. Make sure to aim them properly, as they are indeed very bright! But as Daniel Stern points out, fog lamps are not really meant to be auxiliary lighting for regular use on the highway- only for inclement weather. Though the Diode lights do work well on the trail and at low speeds illuminating the sides of the road.
