My 4runner which has less than 1100 miles already has severe paint damage. My buddies kids scooter literally just leaned on it (saw it happen) and it took the paint off down to the bare metal.

Yeah metal on metal usually doesn’t yield good results, my rigs roof is a testament to that. That’s definitely not barely leaning on the paint though. That’s rested full weight on your door. The paint isn’t indestructible, but it isn’t as fragile as you’re making it sound either. I wouldn’t consider that “severe” paint damage either, more like a knick.

It was literally an 8 pound scooter and it gently tipped over, you might expect a scratch from that but it gouged it deep. There's already a class action lawsuit going for the white paint, I should have gotten the silver instead but oh well too late

8 pounds of metal with a edge falling into a metal panel will do this. It’d do it to any color. I also have super white and will say the paint does suck major ass compared to my MGM taco I had and my wife’s black Mercedes. But from a scooter falling like that, I’m sure any vehicle would do that.

make the kids parent pay to get it repaired.

I'm not trying to argue with you but I saw it happen and it normally wouldn't do the carnage it did. I've seen pictures on tacoma world where brand new white tacos on dealership lots have chunks of paint flaking off. I should have heeded my own instinct and followed my gut and paid the price.

My warning is to others not to get white especially if they plan to wheel. I had plenty of pinstripes on my cement taco and learned to live with them, my fear is with this crappy white paint, it will marr down to the bare metal each time it gets pin stripes. For now I touched it up and chalked it as a life lesson. I'll probably end up wrapping the door and fenders.

That's the problem with the world we live in; a class action lawsuit for white paint.... really? I had a Super White Tacoma that had a incident with the fuel door, and when I went to the body shop to get it fixed the body man(the owner) commented on the paint that was on the Toyotas being as good as lots of vehicles out there. So I guess if you want to be fair, get somebody to bring over their Inferno Red Runner, recreate the accident and see how the paint comes out. Good luck on the class action lawsuit. P.S.- Keep kids away from the vehicles with shovels, forks, hand grenades, and especially scooters! Have a great day!

I'm not suing anyone, the class action happened well before I purchased a white 4runner. It's not a frivolous lawsuit either, if you do a simple Google search, thousands of various toyota models had white paint literally chip off without any merit (no 8 poind scooters were leaning on their paint)

That's why they discounted the blazing blue for the tacoma, they admittedly had a paint defect with that color.

It surprises me how concerned people are with paint on vehicles designed for offroad uses.

I decided from day one that chips and scratches were on the bottom of my list of concerns, but to each their own :notsure:

Earned scratches are fine with me. But if someone else causes it, I would be less than happy. Right after I bought my FJ Cruiser new, someone launched a shopping cart into the pax door. It's probably a good thing that I didn't see it happen!

Scratches are one thing, paint flaking off to the bare metal is another entirely. The class action against the poor adhesion for the super white is documented and well known. Hope you get taken care of OP.

100% agree with you! I have a SW that I'm trading in for MGM. It only has 500 miles on it. I barely drive it and when I do it's just to the store where I park in the back away from other cars, literally doing everything to keep it in pristine condition and when I was washing it yesterday I saw two small paint chips down to the metal on the front bumper. How?!

I had my last car for 15 years and took it on tons of adventures and it didn't have a single paint chip. It's pretty ridiculous to me that they chip down to metal that easily. I really hope MGM doesn't have the same issue

White paint wheeler here. Got some gauges in my plastic bumper but I couldn't believe they weren't worse. I see the class action was for 2009 - 2018, it's very possible they got their $h!t together for the 19 and 20's, unsure...I never trust Toyota to implement changes quickly.

However, I was surprised by the LACK of pinstripes. I pushed a few trees. Scientifically speaking, hard enough for the glass to creeeeeeekkkkkkk when I went by, and for the limb to pop the person in the backseat with the window down (I know right, super good data there :)!).

Also, Friend had a SW 2015 w/ KDSS and he wheeled it hard enough to toast some wheel bearings after 30k miles. Traded it for a 2017 SW w/o KDSS so he could lift even higher, another 45k miles wheeling hard. Lots of pinstripes, but no flake.

Some batches are clearly worse than others. I hope mine wasn't built on a Monday.

Side note, SW doesn't show pinstripes at 5ft through the clear. Obviously it would show through the paint. My MGM, however, showed them all.

Sorry for bad luck OP, hope you get it worked out.

If I could go back in time and buy my car new rather than used, I would of gotten it wrapped and under coated the day I got it. I think Toyota's paint is terrible, considering I've seen cars with way more miles and their original paint with less signs of wear than a 10 year old 4runner.

Right below the headlight is plastic bumper unless you mean fender.

But my silver valence has more chips that my white paint so yeah it is what it is.

If TMC just fired all the damn bean counters and put that money toward the R&D guys, then maybe we would have better windshields, paint and even... a manual trans. Ok maybe I’m just dreaming.

Toyota paint sucks in general. Be it the body or the frame
I scratched the crap out of my 2015 Tacoma when I leaned over the bed to set some firewood in it. A button on my shirt dragged against it and took off the paint

Doesn’t seem that bad IMO, paint scrapped on top of the scratch. Smooth it out and put some touch up paint on it. In a month or two you will forget it was even there.

How is the silver paint guys on a new TRD ORP? Damn I would hate to get a new ride scratched like that. I am one who enjoys drinking a beer, washing it and waxing it and then next week it goes back out.

I guess it's slightly more on the corner/side (sorry for the poor quality photo). I know, I now, it's really small but it's the principle of it, hah. Looks like a snake bite.

Dr color chip with make that go away... or stop by a dealer and ask the air brush guy hide it. every used car on the lot gets air brushed and sadly some new ones as well. No one ever knows unless you see it happening.

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
Y'all buy the warranty on that? It includes paint-less dent repair. Per my sales guy they will touch up the paint as part of the repair.
I had a rock hit my hood within the 1st week of ownership that left a nice dent. Need to take it in sometime.

It’s a single stage paint so I believe the clear coat is mixed. I have my vehicle ceramicly coated. However white Toyota paint does really suck.

I have gone several times, have it brush, have had little rock’s fly up and hit the paint and no paint removed. Scratches yes of course. And now I have a ten year plan for the paint if it starts falling off so I am good with the white.
