I spent close to three hours reading forum posts and threads over the weekend, learned a ton. :)

I saw someone kind of allude to that point but not say it outright, so I wanted to ask. Do all non-2WD 4Runners since 2003 have a Torsen center diff?

    Further:
    1. if you have a part-time 4WD 4Runner, can you leave it in 4WD High when driving normally on dry roads?

    2. if you shift into 4WD Low, does that lock the center diff?

    Thanks very much in advance!

This goes for 03-09, some of the 5th gens had some different setups. I'll refer to the center diff as CDL just because its shorter to type.

2wd: only offered on v6 models, fine for on road
4hi-CDL unlocked: good for on road or off road, default mode of v8s, center diff accounts for different wheel speeds while turning on road and doesn't bind. I run in 4hi when the weather is ookey and I had my older tires on, essentially gives it an AWD feel.
4hi-CDL locked: good for off road only, with the CDL locked, front and rear driveshafts spin at the same speed which would cause binding on a road surface, off road is okay because the loose terrain will just move instead of the harsh binding occuring
4lo-CDL locked or unlocked: off road only, CDL doesn't lock itself
CDL button: locks the CD, it won't lock itself, only if you press the button and the yellow light shows on the dash
