Adding auto headlamp feature to 2020 4Runner non limited or Pro

All my other vehicles have auto headlights. This is the only grip my wife has with my 20 Venture.

Has anyone added dded the feature

Could it be this simple or is there more parts involved

    I know its Honda but
I had auto headlights on my 08 Acura TL Type S and my buddy's TL did not. He added the switch and gained the feature

Yes I know how easy it is to just use the switch

    Quick research
    TRD PRO and Limited use

    Headlamp Switch - Toyota (84140-35171)
    Multi-Function Switch, Switch Assembly Headlamps
Limited package. 4Runner. Trd-pro. With auto headlamps.
Notes: Includes Headlamp, Fog Lamp And Turn Signal Switch.

    Venture and below use
    Headlamp Switch - Toyota (84140-35181)
    Multi-Function Switch, Switch Assembly Headlamp
4Runner. Sr5, trail package. Without auto headlamps.
Notes: Includes Headlamp, Fog Lamp And Turn Signal Switch.

I would figure that you’d also need something that senses when it’s light or dark enough for the lights to on or off.

sounds simple to build. perhaps trigger off the ambient sensor to a 12v relay to the light switch. but the switch would have to be on the on position all the time and the sensor and relay will handle the rest :)

I'd like to do the same. It's ridiculous when you look through the owners manual and see all of the different headlight configurations. You'd think Toyota would save a few bucks just making everyone have the same setup with Auto headlights.

Please! If someone figures this out it would be awesome... so disappointing that my base base model ‘05 corolla has auto headlights and my $40,000 SUV doesn’t!!

Why not just leave the headlights on all the time? They turn off automatically.

I felt the same when I bought my 2019 TRD OF but now I just deal with it. From what I saw in previous posts even changing the switch on the column doesn't fix the issue and it could be in the software of the truck. I have just gotten used to leaving the lights on and not worrying about it. The latest issue I have is the sun reflecting off the hood scoop when driving lol

Yeah I’m not willing to pay that much for my 2020. I’ll wait cause $5-$10 seems worth it.

    None (yet)!
I know this is a super old thread, but I just bought my first 4Runner (SR5 Premium), and was wondering if it's OK to just leave the lights on all the time. I know they turn off automatically, so I figure it's not a big deal, but just wondering if anyone's experienced any negative effects from leaving them on.

And I guess I'm right in assuming the "auto" button on the dash is JUST for the auto high beams, right?

You guys with your auto headlights and push button starts. Good lord. Do you have an aversion to twisting your wrists?

That's what I do. Headlights just left on always. No issues. I did reprogram the timer with Carista so they shut off as soon as the driver's door opens with the ignition off.

I don't have an auto button so dunno...?

Nothing wrong with leaving them on all the time other than bulb life will be shorter. howsmydriving42 - you are correct. The "auto" button is new for 2020 and activates the auto high beams.

I’m sure a lot of 4th Gen guys said that about the 5th Gens features and the 3rd did it to the 4th and so on.

My Venture is the same color w/ blacked out trim. I was thinking about getting the matte black decal. Would you say the dark grey is color matched to your truck or is there a big difference ? Both pics look a little different, so hard for me to tell. It does look good on your runner though.

Not so much matched just close
Everybody / manufacture uses black just wanted something different
All the black on mine as a gloss I thought flat black would also look odd agains the black on the mirrors, grill & wipers

2020 Limited here. The auto headlight on feature is pretty much useless without having it auto-on headlights when wipers are turned on. The sensor to turn them on/off based on outside light works ok but it just seems half-assed to not have the wiper auto on bit too.

So if your wipers are on your auto headlights don’t work ?

No if wipers turned on during daylight and headlights on auto, headlights will not turn on. You will have to manually turn them on.

Yes, when dark out it works fine. The complaint is most modern cars with auto headlights also turn them on when wipers come on, regardless of whether or not it is day or night outside. 4runner does NOT have that function, only the function of auto on based on outside light. During the day, put your headlights on auto. Then turn wipers on. Headlights will not come out. Again, half-assed auto on feature.

Ahh okay so I miss understood gripe. So basically, our limiteds headlights don’t auto turn on when you manually turning on wipers.
