Hey y’all I h ave a newbie question, I have searched forever and can’t find an answer so hopefully you can help!
I have a 95 runner and my back tailgate window won’t roll up with the console switch, using the key on the tailgate works up and down no issues. I use the switch and I can roll it down but won’t go up, in fact when I push the up on the switch the window still goes down. Any idea what this could be? I put a meter on the switch wires and 2 of the 5 I’m getting 6v and not 12 so I’m sure that’s part of it but not sure why.
Thank you for the help! This site is awesome.

Sounds like a faulty switch. You’ve diagnosed it, Rpmrunner.

That’s what I’m thinking as well. Just wanted to double check before I bought a new one. I know these vehicles have a ton of moving parts when it comes to that rear window.

True enough, there’s a big mechanism in there + wiring. But usually when things go wrong it’s something simple, and usually a part that gets used often and gets worn out. At least you don’t have to take apart your tailgate to fix it! Good luck, Rpmrunner.

Thank you for the help. Would a bad switch cause the window to roll down even when I push it up? Any way the switch is pushed it only goes down.

I’m guessing it’s defective and shorting out inside. It won’t cost much to replace it and see what happens.

I agree with @Oldtoyotaguy . I would look into a replacement switch. A salvage yard might be a good place to look.

You could probably test the wiring by bypassing the switch, but you would want to know which wire is which before you attempt this.

I've had this happen to me when I owned a 91 4runner. I pulled the switch out and gave it a good cleaning. Compressed air to blow out all the dust. Worked right away. No more problems after that. Try to clean it before replacing.
