Greetings to all brothers and sisters,

I am totally new to this forum, I just bought my 1st car, used 1999 4Runner SR5 AT with 182k miles on her. Being in NYC, its hard to find a like minded brother, so I googled up and found this forum.
Hopefully being in this forum will get me some knowledge and great advice on what to do with my 1st 'Yota.

During this covid19 era, I have to wait 2 weeks for me to get the plates done up here. In the meantime, im trying to set my mind on what kind of build my 'Yota would be.
Being on the east coast with a chance of getting her to go up fishing by the LI beaches and/or hitting upstate terrains with snow and salt, I definitely need a good recommendation on where to find good mechanic/auto shop near me.

Any good link/info from the past thread will also helping me brainstorming on the build type.

    Cheers

Congrats! You're gonna love it, and it'll love you back.

A good tire upgrade is a great start, is it 4WD?

Thank you and it is 4WD yes.

Which size of tire/wheel to start without lifting?

    Cheers

Agreed with canadian.bacon, just start searching thru this entire site and figuring out your needs and wants. I have those same 15" wheels you have, and I have 31/10.5/r15 BFG KO2s - no lift, YET!

    Yes it is 16".

So @mem4runner, you installed those 31/10.5/r15 BFG KO2s on your 16"?

Thank you again all for warm welcome and yes, it is a lot to learn and good thing this community based forum has tons of information to digest.

Truth be told, just found out that this vehicle has a rusted/rotted frame on the right passenger site.
I dont know if its worth the fix and where to find it in my area. I understand Northeast Toyotas are suffering from the heavily salted road during the winter time.

No mine are the 15"s. You can find a BFG KO2 to fit your 16"s though

That sucks but maybe you can find a shop that can cut out the bad area and weld new metal in. Welcome.

    Truth be told.

Today just got meself a 97 Manual Transmission, well maintained. 270k odometer but the 1st owner changed the oil every 3k.
No rot/rust and all the documentation was included.
Could not be happier than this...

I saw a youtube channel that reinforced the metal instead of cutting it, but of course have to clean the rust first..
    would that work?

If you removed the rust first then it would probably work. If you didn't remove the rust first it would buy you time but it would eventually spread to the steel you added too. If the metal was bad enough that it needed bracing, I would probably just cut out the rusty parts and weld new material in but that is a lot more difficult.

I am out on the EC as well. Working through my 2002 4Runner purchase from Go Motors LLC. They're located up in Connecticut. I would strongly suggest you give them a call or swing by. Great people there and they're not only big fans of the 3rd Gens, but they do lots of work on them. They're working on a full frame replacement on the 4Runner I am taking off their hands as we speak!

Ah so you are the lucky guy? Yes I called them multiple times , they told me that they will let me know 2-3days before the 3rd gen goes online but until now, no news and I texted and called, no answers.
Its a great place to find your 3rd gen but its not guaranteed that you will get it as per website descriptions. I guess its because they have a good reputation. So are you getting the A/T or M/T? They currently working on both last time I heard.

Ha! Yah that's me! :hattip: I'd been on the search for the last 6 months and was getting discouraged. Had been keeping an eye on their inventory and saw cars were selling same day as being listed. Figured I'd be best served to just go by to at least look at them and get a keen sense on whether I was happy with them. I went with the A/T. Super clean body and you can't beat finding something with only 80K miles. Although I would've loved having a clutch again! Will post photo updates once I have it! Now.... to "be patient"
