If you’ve got a 5th Gen with push-start, you’ve probably heard about how easy it can be for experienced car-thieves to steal keyless vehicles. Apparently, 4Runners sit high on the list of desired vehicles overseas, with Tacomas, Tundras, and Sequoias not far behind.

When I had my Tacoma, and now with my 4Runner, I was/am able to keep my key-fob near the front of my house without fear of having the signal stolen, by keeping it in a cheap, little Faraday Box - a perfect-fit tea container that my wife had hanging around.

I can walk right up to my vehicle, and even rattle the tin, and no signal will escape to allow me to unlock my doors with a grab of the handle.

Every other container I’ve tried hasn’t worked, and every Faraday box I’ve found online look terrible.

Do any of you do the same? What do you use?

If I had that option, I’d do the same.

Honestly considering building one, but I don’t think I could get it permitted for the side of my house.

I keep my key under my tinfoil hat.

Just kidding. You make a good point. Would be handy if there was some kind of pocketable pouch that blocks the signal, so you'd have convenient protection when traveling too.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the whole point of this thread just went over your head.

One of my friend's had a Honda Pilot stolen when it was parked a block from home. Apparently they're easy to steal too. I'd like to say I'll take precautions to lower the chance mine will get stolen.. but I won't.

Without the key Fob , wouldn't the 4runner stop after a certain distance of being driven ?

I've thought about testing this. Leave my key at home and see how far I get. I think, in this scenario, the thieves would steal your fobs code and duplicate a key. I could be wrong though, I don't have experience in stealing cars :spy:

Not sure about the 4R in particular, but I remember reading a story about some auto journalists at a LeMons race. Broke some stuff, drove the rental car 2 hrs to the closest shop with the parts. Guy walks back out to rental car (now shut off) and realizes he doesn't have the key. So it started with the key in someone else's pocket, or someone else started it, then guy without key drives for 2 hrs without key before shutting off. Not sure if this issue has been fixed yet, this story was a couple years ago.

    That would never, ever happen.

No car company would stupid enough to make their vehicle intentionally stall out while driving. They would get sued out of existence if they programmed the vehicle to shut off in the middle of highway when the key battery got to low and it can’t recognize it was present. That would be nearing a criminal level of negligence.

If its running and the key is removed from the vehicle, it will stay running indefinitely while giving you warning lights and beeping at you that the key is missing. Once YOU turn it off then it will not allow a restart.

True - but you never know. Met a guy last week who just had his Tacoma stolen - with a Club on it. To be fair, he thinks he knows who stole it: there was a car parked every few days on his street, but he never thought much of it, and then after his truck disappeared, the car never showed again...

    Anyways - there’s this:
