Sidewall crack on k02

Today I noticed a long 10”+ crack on the sidewall of my rear BFG Ko2 tire (photos attached). Do I need to replace the tire? They only have about 12k miles and I’m unsure when or how this happened. If I replace it, can I replace just one?

 

I ordered a set of tires one time that came in a box, and when the nin-com-poop took them out of the box he used a utility knife to cut the box.... and yes I waited for some new tires. This looks similar to that, not that that is what happened, just saying. I would show it to the place you got the tires, and go from there.

 

That does not look like a crack. It looks like something very sharp sliced across it.

 

he’s had them for 12k miles so I don’t think that going back would be an option.

OP if it’s only superficial you’re more than likely fine to drive on. However you may want to take it to a tire shop and have someone who knows tires inspect it to verify it’s only superficial.

 

That's kind of what I meant, besides they will probably say it's dangerous and try to sell a new tire, unless it's not a very deep cut, then I would just replace it for peace of mind, if it involves sidewall cords.

 

OP, if you can take it to a Tire shop (@Discount Tire), they'll inspect for free. You can see if you can peel back the cut a little and look for cords of the sidewall. If it's deep enough that cords are exposed, replace. If not, take it to a tire shop just to have somebody confirm it's a cosmetic cut.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that it looks like a slice or cut and not a crack and it’s definitely not deep enough to expose sidewall cords.

I’ll have a couple of tire shops take a look, I just anticipate that most would just try to sell me a replacement even if it was not really necessary. If I go that route am I ok to replace just one when I have 14k miles on the others?

 

Depending on the tread of the others. Worst case, buy two, replace the worst of the other 3, and make that secondary one a full size, matching spare tire.

 

So I went to two tire shops and both said it was only cosmetic and not to worry about it.

 

That's a good thing. Don't forget the lottery ticket today!
