Just finished doing a modest upgrade to my 2020 ORP's stock stereo system. I didn't want to spend too much, but was looking for the best bang for my buck to implement a noticeable upgrade to the stock stereo.

Under the driver's seat, I mounted a $229 (sale) JBL BassPro SL2 powered sub. Then I replaced the front component speakers with a set of $119 NVX VSP65s.

The difference is tremendous, even using the stock head unit to power the NVX's. The sound stage now has room to breathe. The muddiness of the stock system is gone. And the bass hits hard enough for these middle-aged ears. The SL2 fits perfectly under the driver's seat with room for wiring. All in all, I am even more pleased than I thought I'd be. A highly recommended, inexpensive upgrade.

Oh, and the TacoTunes wiring harnesses made everything a lot easier. Also recommended!

Does the off road premium come with the JBL system from the factory?

    Ah I see.
I’ve got the JBL in my pro. I like it, but would like to add something for a little more bass.

Hi, I'm not sure what this means? Are you trying to say the TRD Pro has the JBL? Because that's correct. But the ORP (Off-Road Premium) does not.

The BassPro tucked up under the driver's seat very nicely. Basically a stealth installation. Does the factory JBL radio present unique difficulties?

Not at all. Then again, my old Xterra was set up this way (sub under the seat) from the factory, so maybe I just got used to it.

Nice work! I personally went with the flagship package from OEMAudio+, found here https://oemaudioplus.com/toyota/4runner/

I added the additional sub amp. Took some time to install AND was over $2k. It does sound crisp and have found that I have way more than adequate bass.

@Red_5 I picked up my 2020 Premium last week and took it to a local stereo shop here in NY. I don't know if they checked the drivers seat, but they said a unit from Memphis with almost identical dimensions would not fit in the car. I used the Memphis setup in two Subarus so I was surprised when they said it wouldn't fit. Do you have any photos of the install or how it sits now?

    Memphis: https://www.amazon.com/Memphis-SA11...ocphy=9004283&hvtargid=pla-654723940535&psc=1
    Memphis: 13.78" x 9.84" x 2.56"
    JBL : 13.56 x 9.875 x 2.81"

If your setup worked in the ORPremium either setup should work in mine.

Did you do the install yourself? Why was it over $2k when the web page has the top end system at $1799? Did you add something else to it?

Yes my buddy and I installed ourselves. They will send you a link to a full install video. Was pretty straightforward though.

i bought the dedicated Sub Amp to get more power to the sub. Otherwise it would share power with the rest of the speakers. Amp was nearly $300.

Perfect makes sense. The video and PDF are a great help. Just need to decide if I want to spend that kind of cash.

Easy answer. Yes. Yes you do. The implementation into the stock radio is seamless. There is nothing aftermarket looking about the system.

Granted, you will never win audio contests based on volume or amplitude. It is touted as a high fidelity reference system meant to more accurately reproduce sound and music as intended.

However the added sub in the back makes riding with passengers a bit tricky. Sounds great when driving solo or with others just listening to music. But having a wife and baby in the backseat, I find myself turning the bass down less than 20% of its max.
