What I wanted to say is have had Tacomas, Tundras, plus a Blazer and lastly an Xterra. It got the infamous "Raspberry Shake", mixing the tranny fluid with the coolant which ended the transmission. Seems like the Xterra has done this trick for years. So - are there any tricks that certain 4 Runner years can pull that I should know about before I buy another one? Thanks for any replies.

    Hey bud.

Third gens are the best and most reliable ones, my opinion.
They do get the strawberry milkshake also.

Things you can look for when buying a 4runner.

Does it have a new radiator or rebuild transmission? (if so, maybe it had a history of strawberry milkshake and the owner did work)
If it has the original radiator/transmission, check the transmission fluid AND the radiator water. Check for "strawberry milkshake"

After you've purchased, immediately install a transmission cooler.

Let me find a write up I did on this..
